This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
So strange to see this post. I've been struggling with something like this for a long time. What my ambition is for my horse hobby. It is suppose to be fun, and for the last 2 years, it's just not been that because I have gotten sidetracked into trying to make my hobby pay for itself.I really think very few people actually make money in the horse business.
Why this post is funny to me is, just this morning I got my prespective back on what I want to do with my horses. I called Mack bawling because I was tired of the pressure. He didn't put it on me I was doing it to myself, but I just needed to work it out and he helped me do that:) I got it settled and headed to town to get the paperwork I needed.Just got back.
I had the most fun with my horses when I was CTRing. I have wanted to do it so bad again, ever since I got Harley. I know he would make a great CT horse. It's just I bought him to resale as a started barrel horse. I don't want to do barrels. It scares me, there is a lot of arena work involved, and I don't like arena work, you go to jackpot and spend more time just sitting on a horse rather then riding, it's alot more expensive.
I just want to have to work ONE horse, the same horse hopefully for the rest of my life, I want to do CTR, about 4 a year. I don't want to make money, I don't want to sell horses when I've got them doing good. I just want to ride and compete a little every year.
I sent in my entry fee, it is in the mail now, to go to a CTR Sept. 10-11. (And just now, just this minute I realized that is my anniversay, but Oh well, mack will understand:), But I'm going:). I'm not saying I won't do barrels ever, but it's definitly NOT going to be a main focus.
Sorry for the ramble. I know I must sound like a loon, always changing my mind, but this is something I've really been struggling with, and now that I've made my mind up and committed to it I'm very excited. I could actually make it to 2 rides this year, there is another close to home in Nov.
Becky
CTR is cross-country race?
Good for you. Hadrly anybody makes money in the horse business so do what gives you pleasure.
How is Harley?
I think this is a great epiphany for you. Loony would be continuing to do what isn't working for you. Yours was a fine plan, but you no longer want it. Now go do what you really want! Good luck!
Thanks, I'm still grinning, it's such a relief to stop worrying about it.
CTR=Competitive Trail Riding.
Becky
Oh, and Harley is good. That one bite on his back did turn a bit pink yesterday, but it wasn't sore and raw. By Sun., when the serious conditioning gets started he should be 100%.
I'll ride him again tomorrow with Julia, it will be an easy ride. Mack is off Fri, and Sat, so I won't ride, but by Sun. morning I bet it wll be fine.
Becky
I just thought Mack and the kids really wanted me to do barrels so I gave it my best shot. It's just not for me, and Mack said he didn't care, he'd support me in what ever I did.
I'm definitly going to sell Rusty and Belle. They are just not going to work for me for anything. I've lost the ambition to raise a baby:). I just want to ride. Being a nice papered mare, I think I'm going to run her thru a Quarter Horse sell they have in a town nearby that should get her a good home. It's not a meat market sell, alot more high class. They only have it 2 x's a year. It should be coming up in the fall. Rusty, I'll sell as a trail horse.
Becky
Actually it doesnt sound daft, or a ramble or strange. It sounds like the posts we have had on here today have got a few minds thinking about what life is about and if that makes just one person stop and think and decide that they need to take a curve instead of going straight then we have all achieved something as friends. : )
Great news Becky! : )
Man, that really looks like a big horse.
Becky
Beautiful horse! Great pics SB! call me absent minded or whatever, i know your family is from MO but where are you now? That is some beautiful scenery in the backgound on one of your pics! : )
He's 16-2, the other unrideable one is 16-3.
I'm 5'3" so I look like a peanut on him.
We've had really good rains here --- slow ones, so that they soak in.
I got to get back to work -- Sharn those puppies are so darling.
Later, y'all.
It must be something in the air. I didn't even see all the posts about ambition and finding out what is important in life till AFTER I had figured out what I want:) That's what I thought was funny and strange:)
I'd run out there now and start working if it wasn't so darn hot. Next week, I'll be on him by 7 every morning at least 4 days a week. With a goal to reach that doesn't sound bad at all. I haven't been able to drag my self out there to ride that early in y ears.
Becky
It will be at Robbers Cave State Park, by Wilburton OK.
Becky
Wow, either you're only about 4 feet tall, or that horse is as huge as you said he is!
Well I know that we still have heaps ahead of us, selling, moving, building again and starting a farm, but its what we all want and it has given me a new dream, a new burst of energy and life. I KNOW that what we are planning on doing is right, and i am excited.
You now know what it is you want to do, so this will give you more energy to pursue it and make it happen! : )
LOL He is big isnt he! : )
Are you going to farm, like to provide you own stuff, or farm to sell what you grow?
Becky
Both! : ) We plan to do hormone free, pasture raised beef, pork, chicken, goat and rabbit vegetables, and honey, and i plan to make my hearty beef pies to sell at farmers markets. (I get orders now!) We are studying all the pros and cons, and working out how to make it work.
I was partly raised on a farm, love to cook wholesome meals and love to garden. this is my idea of heaven and with a lot of hard work together we will make a go of it!
