The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I never thought to take a picture, I'm not sure I even could have, but we came across a scary rock today:). It's on a trail we have been on lots of times, but it's a new rock, really big, someone must have drug it there. Harley did not want to go past it. I let Julia go first the first time, he was going backwards so much I was afraid I'd crash into her. On the way back around we came across it from the other direction and he started the same stuff, so had Julia stay back and I made Harley go first. He finally did, even walked up to it and nibbled on some dead grass on top of it. Silly horses.

This is Julia, going around the fence post of the guy that blocked the trails. She says her horse is a Tennessee Walker, but doesn't have papers. He doesn't walk all that fast, like most gaited horses I've seen, Harley out walks him. He seems like a pretty good horse, he's supposedly 16.

Here are the trees that the guy cut down to block the trail. He cleared out some room so I can get around now.

Once you get around the ends where he blocked this is the middle. You can see it is a nice trail, that's why I was a bit aggravated that he blocked it. We just don't have that many trails as nice as this one so close to my house.

This is the other end of the trail.

And you weren't even on a goofy A-Rab horse! :~D

Glad you can now get back there again, it does look like nice trails! Did you find out he was trying to block others from accessing? Like with vehicles? Or what?

...We can now barely see them over the pile of frap that is accumulating there :~D

Oh Gawd! How tacky! Apparently they don't plan on moving anytime soon. That would just bug the sh!t out of me.

It is a mess... and you know, I'm not a snob, we live in an old mobile here ourselves.... but even though it's just a rental, I really try to make it look nice, and I pride myself on the yard and grounds, even if I can't help the architecture of the place! But that... that's just well, TrailerTrash.

It hasn't got anything to do with mobile homes. I have known people that live in them that small and keep them up. Like you said it's how you keep your yard and the outside of your home. That's just trashy and a health hazzard.

They don't look like they're planning to move anytime soon, which makes me wonder about how they're going to empty their holding tank :~\

He was blocking 4 wheelers. Seems they cut his fence, which is really stupid. They cut it just about 20 ft from the end. Once I knew why he blocked it I didn't blame him. He put up a really nice fence, and that's not easy around here. But he cut a way thru for me, just wide enough for a horse. So far the 4 wheelers haven't noticed it.

She always rides behind me so I haven't been able to really see how the horse moves. I asked her today if the horse would walk faster if he was in the lead and she said no. We did do some trotting and lopeing, but again she always stayed behind me.

I've noticed how riders who are a bit insecure always want the back. I've tried to tell them their horse is more apt to stay calm and easy going if they take the front. In my experience if you are behind horses moving out, your own horse is liable to get goofy, just wanting to keep up. The horse in the front doesn't move out as fast because he isn't wanting to leave the other behind. Sometimes I want the back just so I can work on the horse to teach him to stay calm when the ones in front move out.

I don't blame him for blocking 4 wheelers either, and good for you that he did!

Have you ever gone back to ride on that other neighbor's big place?

Oh there you are:)

Yeah, I've been back there a few times. It's really nice, but he has cross fencing and the part I can get on without opening gates is pretty flat ground, not alot of hills. I like hills. But it's good to go to make they trott and lope good long distances. I could open the gates and go in farther but I haven't. I can get the gates open from horse back, but we haven't quite got closing them down.

I usually put really insecure riders in the middle, if there's a middle. The front horse does take responsibility for the others, and not all of them start out real confident as leader. Cyn seems to do really well when we've had her go first, but I'd be nervous if there was a difficult or new obstacle. It's just my comfort zone to lead, and point out tips or warnings for ecurbh behind me.

I've really been starting to dread the loss of Bay. It's going to be hard to ever find a horse I'll trust as much.
