This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Maybe. We are looking at cost. It surprised me that my husband said he was thinking about it.

Clematis does stay woody and therefore once established does still offer some screen, especially if planted with an evergreen honeysuckle like trumpet honeysuckle. You can then get a longer flowering period and it looks really good.
What about Star Bush (Illicium floridanum)? It looks good used as a screen and is evergreen with beautiful flowers.
I'll probably do nothing.... but I think the best bet might be a row of those evergreen cedar type things that get huge.
Um I hate those!~ They just are so um ugly. JMO! : ) Why not plant something that you can benefit from like some fruit trees? with a trellis lower and a rampant climber or two?
Or if you can be patient, my favorite type of hedge is a Beech tree hedge. Beautiful color and the yellow/golden leaves stay on it all winter providing a very good screen. They grow very thick and great for birds to build their nests in. : ) I am not sure if it is sold here or not.....
In the foreground, you can see our mesh fence and the hedge of rhododendrons we have been trying to grow.
Oh! I can see why the need for immediate screening is needed. : ( I would be tempted to go for the russian vine. You can prune it when needed but if you sit back you can see it growing! Plant some in that spot and you should get a screen very quickly. Especially if you keep the soil moist and feed it grow more or something! Good luck! It's a shame they couldnt have "camped" further away!
Is there children? Maybe they will leave when school starts back?
Yeah - but I don't want vines that will take over all the trees. :~D
It's a hard luck story, I just can't wait till they get crabby in the heat and cramped conditions and start a big ole redneck domestic incident. I can feel it brewing :~\
Well I'm back from the barn, and I had a good ride. It was too hot to take pictures... I couldn't wait to get home and take a cold shower. I got a good work out. Most of the ride was without stirrups. But the horse that I was riding, Daisy, picked up a nail... a very small penny nail, but a nail nonetheless. :-/ Luckily it didn't puncture very far. It was strange, because I felt her hitch like she had clipped herself on a rock, and then she went along fine for quite a while, nice and smooth and sound, and then all of a sudden went dead lame. We think that she had picked up the nail initally, and then hit it against a rock later, which drove it into the hoof a bit.
They aren't camping for fun, they got evicted from where ever they came from and are there as a favor, till they get back on their feet.
You really think we're going to buy that?
What about just doing that 10 feet wide section in front of the existing fence with a tall 6ft plus individual board fence that can be painted deep green to blend in and then taken down eventually when other plants grow up or they move? : )
I have a neighbor that has sections of mirrored metal on his fence. It's really unusual but pretty. His yard looks twice as big. The animals confused at first though.
could be tricky when you start shooting at that trespasser you see at the edge of your property!! LOL
Hey Cindy! It's great to see ya back on the thread!
~shakes head~
Don't make us show you the rules... :~D
