This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I'm glad he was willing to help you. The lads father might be more than happy to have his son pay for his crime. So hopefully it wont ruin a good friendship.
Goat Creek Canyon and Mt. Adams.
Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Didn't you mention Mt. Adams before?
Good mornin! What a nice picture to have in front of you!
I don't know if I have! Mt. Adams is one of our other sleeping volcanos. Gifford Pinchot National forest also includes Mt. St. Helens.
Good morning!
Hope everyone that was treating cuts and scrapes will report that they are looking much better this week.
If you've been away from the thread all weekend, be sure to go back to the last page to see pics of the farm Rose of Sharn and deaconjim are hoping to buy in the Ozarks... and also Ruthy's second trail ride.
There are a few pics of my weekend trail ride also posted yesterday.
Good morning everyone!
Well Darn! I hate that I missed ya. I was out trail riding Saturday morning. I hope you had a good trip home and get good news on the property you want. It sure looks pretty, and the nearby trails would be heaven!
More great pics! Thanks!
Very good!
I'll have more pictures later... My friend Tiff is bringing her yearling here for a few days-to-aweek while she goes camping with the rest of her horses.
I'm going to put the yearling and the pony together in the back forty... I think we can pull that off without scrapes. Bay was such a domineering tyrant when we brought Cyn in, it's not worth mixing her up with him for just a few days.
We have noticed that Smokeys right eye is weeping and I think he has pink eye. What is the best thing we can do? I don't have any medications for it yet.
Hey Sharn, I'm flying out the door but caught your post. When it comes to eyes, best call the vet, could be something in there.
chat later, girls!
You know.... without even seeing it, it probably isn't ~really~ pinkeye... more likely a plugged tear duct. Their tears normally drain down to a hole in the nostril, and if that gets clogged it runs down their face.
If his eye is really red, I could really only recommend having the vet look at it. It's possible he has a conjunctivitis or pink eye... it's also possible he scratched or whacked it on something and there's no way to be sure from here. Even still... the vet's the only one that can unclog the duct if that's it. It'll either clear on it's own, or continue to run, which just attracts flies.
Take a picture of it.
If it stops raining long enough I'll get a pic, apparantly while we are away my friend said they had a haze storm here, which had dust/sand in it. Maybe I just need to put some clear eyes on it.
Probably fly irritation. I don't think horses get pink eye. At least, I never heard of it in these parts.
Well, it all depends on whether it's just draining a clear fluid, or is it goopy looking, like yellow stuff. If it's just clear, I'd just irrigate the eye with an over-the-counter eye wash stuff that they sell for people. If you can't find that, I've used plain saline solution for contacts. If that doesn't clear it up in a day or so then you probably need to take him to the vet. That's what I had to do with my filly. He stained her cornea looking for ulcers first, then he gave me some triple antibiotic opthalmic ointment with cortisone to put in there for a week.
These are those stairs going down to the creek that I've showed y'all before. This is the view from the top. Bluebell did fine with these even though I made her go first and she'd never seen anything like them before...
This is one of my riding buddies and his horse Doc coming down. Forgive the blur. Bluebell was having a good time pawing in the water while I was trying to take the picture...
Miscellaneous trail pics...
This last one I thought y'all might find interesting. I don't think y'all have these kind of trees in your part of the country. They're called "Big Leaf Magnolia" and as you can see when compaired to me, the leaves are pretty darned big. They're well over 2 feet long (I'm 5'7"). The weird thing about them is that they're real white on the bottom and when they fall and land upside down, they look really strange, like giant baby diapers or something, and the horses get spooked by them sometimes.
I've always thought they looked really cool. They have a bloom similar to the ornamental magnolias that everybody is familiar with. They're cream colored but not as big and showy. This particular forest is the only place I've ever seen them.
I'm leaving here now. I've got a chiropractor appointment to see if he can work the kinks out of my neck and back that I got after I bush hogged all day on friday. Talk to y'all later...
Those are absolutely gorgeous pictures! That is a cool bush/tree/jungle plant. We don't have anything like that here.
Those stairs would feel like a challenge, would rather go up them than down them.
Well - Tiff's got trailer hitch issues.... she's putting a whole new hitch on her truck... she won't be over till morning now with the yearling.
Those stairs are cool! I don't know if I could negotiate them without ending up on the ground! Heh.
