Wonka was a very dark book.

I didn't care for it as a child; I remember having to read it sometime around third grade.

These days they're probably still working on Curious George at that grade level.

Probably Dahl's best book was Boy, which isn't a kid's book. The title comes from his mother's way of addressing him. She called him, simply, "Boy."

Also, remember, James and the Giant Peach was directed by Tim Burton, a very dark director.

Didn't like the book either, read it before the movie as my children wanted to see the movie. Thought, "No," and didn't take them. Saw it on TV last year for the first time; realized my original opinion was correct. IMO they lightened it up with some "fluff" and music to make the movie passable for kids, but there is a very dark side that I did not care for.

I Certainly would not like to see the book and character more correctly portrayed in the new version. I never cared for Depp anyway. Not that I think he will care if I don't care for him or don't see his movies.
