The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 06/01/2005 7:12:04 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah, but bless her, she's a little old widow woman. Makes me so mad.

Her son came and fixed it for her.

Ms. Emery is speaking here in OK today and tomorrow! It's a ways off though...don't know if the old car could make it!

Oh, I would love to hear her speak!

My across-the-cul-de-sac neighbor is a little old widow woman too. Her husband died 9 months ago (he was a sweet man).

We're VEY protective of her!

Our neighborhood has quite a few like that...they've been here since this was a really nice neighborhood and are here now that it's an "older" neighborhood. I can think of three on just my street.

I think that's who I'll focus on this coming Christmas. I take pumpkin bread and cookie platters to all the neighbors, none of whom seem to care and one of which literally opened the door, said "OK" and took it and shut the door this last Christmas. Hmph. I think I'll just make some for these three ladies and my neighbor right across the street (my friend).

Seems to me that there are more rude neighbors than there are good ones these days.

One of the families in my cul-de-sac has NO consideration for anyone.

They let their teenage son have a loud party that kept the whole circle awake until 2am. The teens ran around in the cul-de-sac screaming and laughing, while the boys parked their cars and competed to see who had the loudest BOOM BOOM music on their car stereo.

One of the very few times I've called the cops on a neighbor.

And these people KNOW that I have small children. They just don't care.

I feel sorry for their younger son (who is about 10 years old). He's a real troublemaker already. And I constantly see him walking or riding his bike around the neighborhood alone late in the evening.

Sad.

Well, here are the meat chickens...the smallest is 4.5 lbs and the largest is about 5.5 lbs.

Up until this week, I have left the light on at night to encourage them to eat frequently. The helps them grow really fast. This week, I have begun to turn the light off at night, to let them sleep and to slow down weight gain in this final week. They have reached the weight needed for processing...the deed will be done shortly after sun-up this Sat, unless one of them develops complications like leg problems.

I just missed out on a book signing event by a new favorite author of mine. I'm still bummed. I'm going to try to make it a goal to get out to see/listen to my fav authors no matter what.... at least once!

So here's encouraging you to try to go see Carla!

I know it...the LATS apparently had a party like that while I was in MO.

It's a rent house...they don't care about this neighborhood.

On a brighter note...Steve is hoping to have his 3rd and final draft of the thesis turned in in two weeks. After that will be just "spit and polish" stuff then he defends it sometime in August.

So, the next two weeks are going to be hard ones again (it seems we get short reprieves now and then while the advisor has it and is assessing it.) But it shouldn't be much longer now.

How do you know what they were singing if'n you weren't there?

Bein' in the choir, we always know ahead of time.

That was just part of my excuse for wantin' to sleep in. Although, sometimes things just get too casual for me there. I have to balance that out with everything else that I love about the place.

But sometimes I need more "high church."

Mornin' folks.

I'm alright! It's been pouring rain here for days now.... super unusual for July. Not thunderstorms, but steady wet rain all day ;~D

I usually don't complain about summer rain, I hate droughts and heat worse, but I do hope it stops before OT gets here Sat. We'd like to do touristy stuff without bein' rained on. Can't go to the volcano if you can't see it!

Nah, the halls of Moria were much more Cathedral-like.

Elves could be more open-air, seeker friendly granola-type...

See post 7994.

The trip was nice, the Cathedral in particular was GORGEOUS - stained glass windows of a kind I haven't really seen before - but I didn't like Denver. ;-) It's an OK place to visit, but...

But a dwarf church would never be described as "high". ;~D
