The Hobbit Hole XXII - ...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

We should ask JimRob to put a Hobbit Hole Troop Support button on the front page.

At the very least, other Freepers could easily donate.

If you get really lucky, a hurricane will come through at the same time and you can take pictures of that too.

Naaahhh...to get the real hurricane experience you have to listen to the wind howl and the trees crack and stay up all night wondering if a tree is going to fall on your house.

Maybe after the FReepathon he'd do that.

I truly believe that this project could be fully supported by FReepers. We just need to spread the word.

Too bad we can't hyperlink our taglines.

'Course I don't know how close you are to water so you might have storm surge to worry about too....and then there's the car....

Is this project getting bigger than just us? I mean, I send when I can, and plan to be more regular about that. But can we keep up with the demand?

I'd like to see us be able to answer every request. But will our resources hold.

I'm just thinkin' outloud, and thinkin' we may want to consider other ways to raise support for this...

Wrangling a major donation or two would certainly help, in addition to our smaller regular checks. Winmag as bankroller with us kicking in only what we ~can~ is very financially risky to our Rick, who is not about to say 'no' to a soldier who writes. Trouble is, we probably aren't' going to get the charitable wings of any corporation to donate without official 501(c)3 status, and I don't think there's any interest in doing that. We'd have to find folk willing to make a personal contribution without any return of deductibility.

I don't think deductibility is really that important to most people. It's not probably a deal breaker. They just want to know it's for real. Official status makes people feel like it's not a scam.

Maybe FReepers wouldn't care... I wonder if JimRob would allow a thread about it after the 'thon. But then again, I wonder if winmag wants that.... It would make available, through paypal, some of his personal info... maybe that could be made more anonymous. Also, there's the risk that if we tried to get more publicity through a thread or through emailing our friends, we'd get more new requests for knives than new money ;~D

Morning Corin - perhaps the naybers would prefer some rocks near the property line, and you could tell them that you are in process of developing 'a riffle/pool complex' which is an excellent aquatic habitat type.:-)

I'm in Kendall, which is inland.

No storm surge to worry about here.

But trees falling are a definite danger.

Hmmm.... we'd love it! I think there is potential that he'd allow ~something~, if not something that overt. There are certainly others who have wanted to fundraise here and he can't really allow it for everyone, but he may allow something. We need to do some work though, first. We (ecurbh honey) need to really spiff up the other site before making any appeals to him about it, with all this soldier feedback included and a clear description of what we do.

At least it's coming during the day. I hate it when they hit at night...you can't see the trees falling.
