This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
They just drop in HAir. I would have taken off if I knew when. The last time I had to take off for the day and wait and that wasn't possible this time.
But I know know any vet that lives like that 'just dropping in'. They make appts, they try to stick to them... The appt is not some nebulous "when I can get around to it" It's a time.... Thursday at 9:00... even if sometimes they have emergencies and end up a little behind, that's the schedule.
If I had an appt and I wasn't here, neither my vet or my shoer would do them without me. That's not my decision, it's theirs.
ERRR.... But I DON'T know any vet that lives like that 'just dropping in'.
Anyone else in here ever had a vet do that?

He must have sedated her with Ace, which has a reputation of horses coming out of it with no warning. He should have used Dormosdan. With enough of that, no way that horse is gonna paw.

He doesn't sound very professional, does he? I've never had a vet that would quit because of a fractious horse. They just drugged them until they got the desired result. To walk away after half a float is ridiculous.
Another thing I don't like is that some vets don't like to use an oral speculum. They claim they can be dangerous for them if the horse slings his head with it in there and knocks them in the head. That may be true in certain cases, but then like you said, you sedate them a little more before you start. I just don't think they can do a proper job if they don't get the horse's mouth open wide enough to get to the back teeth and are able to use both hands to feel for points and such, which you can't do if you're having to hold onto a horse's tongue and they're mouthing around trying to get it back. That's the only thing I don't like about my current vet. I've got the name of a guy who supposedly went to training to be an equine dental specialist. He's not a vet, teeth is all he does, but everybody claims he's good so I've been meaning to call him to come out and do everybody. Otherwise, I'll just haul them, a couple at a time, an hour and a half drive from here to another vet that I think does a better job. It's aggrivating!

No way.
Yeah - unless he was really injured, which does happen, (it's a dangerous job sticking your fingers into the orifices of horses) I don't see why he'd quit a teeth float because they're 'dangerous'. If they fight.... he didn't use enough sedative. If he was struck or pawed at, that can hurt, but it sounds weak to me.
I think my vet uses Ketamine for surgeries like gelding and suturing bad wounds, but I'm not sure what he uses for floating. I'll have to ask.
I use an equine dentist that only uses hand tools. He does a great job. Winnie was done with power tools before I bought her but afterwards, her teeth started breaking off. I called my equine dentist to come see her and he was appalled at how Winnie's teeth looked. He took off some huge points that the guy with the power tools didn't get. We never did figure out why her teeth were breaking off but it seemed to me to be related to the power tools. My current vet says power tools are the best but I disagree. He won't ever work on my horses teeth, that's for sure.

I wonder if he's primarily a small animal vet and he's a bit afraid of horses. Vets and horseshoers get alot worse than pawed in the leg, this guy sounds like a wimp.
My current vet not only uses the speculum, but he sedated Bay to the point where his chin was completely resting on a crutch. He was too drunk to lift it. (I thought he was gonna fall over, and we were wary to stay out from under him ;~D) He needs to really sedate them, because he uses a power rasp on a drill, not just a hand rasp. It's loud and scary, and more powerful, so he doesn't want them to move at all, or he takes out cheek, I'd imagine.

I think the difference is that it uses a finer rasp, turning faster, rather than a harsh rasp done by hand. Either can be done wrong..., I'm sure.

No kidding, judging from the stuff they put in the horses mouth. I just had a bad experience with the power tool guy so for now, I'm sticking with the hand tool guy. By the way, my vet agrees with you, not me.
I'd love to submit some.... but since I don't know exactly what mood she's looking for, I think it'd be easiest to upload a selection to an online album she can look at.
Unless you know what she might be looking for... horses loose? grazing, running, playing, or horses on trail, like the 'over the ears' pictures? People or tack visible or to be avoided? (not that ~I'd~ model, mind you)
