*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hey Hair, while we're on the subject of shoeing- a quick question for you. Does Bay have bar shoes?

No - he's wearing regular shoes, with thin pads underneath.

He's been trimmed to encourage heel growth, and he files off his toe a little more than he used to, to help him break over, but my farrier doesn't see the need for bars or wedges at this time. Not knowing better, I'd have to say it's working... Bay's comfortable and sound as far as I can tell.

But then my farrier doesn't believe Bay has Navicular. I don't know if that's ever going to cause a conflict in the future if Bay gets worse. And while we're on the subject of shoeing prices... my farrier charges a different amount each time, I swear, he charges based on his personal bank balance. ;~D If he needs money, he charges more, if he's flush, he charges less.

If Bay needs new shoes and pads, his are $75. I think it was $65 for standard shoes. Resets he charges around $50. He charges $25 to trim Cyn, and $15 for the pony, because the pony was grandfathered in at the old price, and he likes her. And I do them every 8 weeks.

Figure an average of 20-30 miles, twice a week generally. No riding during the bad weather this winter so 2 1/2-3months with no use. I'm bad at this but my guess would be probably about 600 to 1000 miles.

Well as long as he's comfortable and sound, keep doing what you're doing! :-) My farrier charged $90, but my horse had bar shoes and pads in the beginning. He "progressed" to regular shoes and pads later on. The farrier didn't think my horse had navicular either, but it could be that Bay has navicular changes, and any horse can get that and not be in too much trouble at all.

Well, he usually is.

I've been watching him today and decided he's ~off~. He's been kindof thudding around, no spunk at all even when the mares were running, and I saw him standing out in the paddock switching weight back and forth on his fronts. That was the deciding factor.... I just Buted him.

I swear, it wasn't in him 3 minutes and he was dancing around on the way back to the paddock, and I know it wasn't because the drugs had time to work. I turned him loose and he took off at a gallop to join the others. Who knows about him.

Silly Arab. :-)
He probably got really excited when he went back because he probably thought that you were taking him in to work, and now he thinks he's getting off scott-free. :-)

Thankyou! They are very wrinkly! She had 3 blue, 1 black and white and spotted all over! and a tri. It was her very first litter so I was worried how she would fare. She seems to be doing great but I am staying with her a lot and she doesnt mind. She lost one Tri, that was obviously the first and by far the biggest.
Her Sister is due to have hers any time...............: D

Tuffy gets egg bars with pads at $135 every 5 weeks. All of my other horses are barefoot.

LOL....i was just outside feeding my horses. The people that live next door are building a house (they have been living in a garage type building with living quarter for the last year, and just started their house last week). Anyway, while I was feeding one of my roosters crowed. One of the workers over there answered him:)....

I thought it was funny, anyway.
