*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I'm like you, I can watch barrel racing all day. Jumping, too. The World Paint Horse Show is going on right now, for 2 weeks. They have a little bit of everything to watch, playday stuff, jumping, western and english pleasure, roping, you name it. They also have an awesome trade show and I'm hoping I can find a smallish harrow to drag my pastures.

Fire was 21 mos. ago. Someone broke in, robbed stuff, then torched the house.
Insurance company JUST paid it off a couple few months ago.
We never considered moving back to 'no house' until we ran into this second idjit of a landlord.
Kids are thrilled to be going back home.

Oh how awful. Glad you had it insured at least, and that the kids are excited to go back.

Well, one thing that would give you some peace of mind is people are going to take care of a horse they paid that much for:)

That reminds me of a story they told us at the clinic. This happened the weekend before the clinic. There is a set of sisters, 14-13 years old that have been winning everywhere they go on the $100,000+ horses their parents bought them. I saw them run here last year at a Drysdale barrel series. Very good horses.

Anyway the 14 year old has won $150,000 on her horse in the last year. She was in OK City running that weekend. The guy that videos all of Martha's run said he got the whole thing on tape. I guess the girl was in the alley way, and when she took off the horse push off so hard his leg snapped. The guy said it sounded like a 22 rifle going off. The girl didn't get him shut down till she was almost to the 1st barrel. They got the horse loaded in a trailer and was on their way to the vet, but he went into shock. I guess when that happens there is nothing they can do. They had to put him down as soon as they got him there.

The video guy was telling us that in the barrel racing community the rumors were flying that the girl had lost control of the horse in the alley way and he got in the fence, but he said he had it on tape, it just snapped when she took off.

I think the horse must have had something already going on and it just finally gave out...

At the clinic that was what all the intructors and Martha could talk about. They were really mourning the loss of a great horse.

I think it's cool that you've been able to keep track of Juma too. If he ever needs a retirement home, you'll be able go give it to him. Very nice! :o)

Yup, and I told him that if Juma gets hurt or sick and can't race anymore, I'd take him back.

Oh, that's awful. Reminds me of Ruffian. People were probably blaming the little girl because you really hate to think that a horse's leg could just snap like that, there has to be a good reason. People that have been in the horse industry for a long time ought to know better, though. Nothing surprises me anymore.

I didn't exactly say much to anyone about the fire after it happened. We stayed with friends and my 'internetting' was limited, PLUS it was waaaay too upsetting to discuss. heck, it was just in the last couple months that I could sleep most of the night WITHOUT waking from dreams of being in a fire. LOL.

The insurance we had on it was that 'force-placed' stuff. NO ONE would insure us,on our own, because...1. we heated with a woodburner, 2. we had dogs, 3. we had horses.
The younger kids have ALWAYS been wanting to go home, too. It was a toss-up on who was MORE homesick, them or me. LOL!
I'm uploading some pix of the place 'before'. If no one minds, I can post them when done. It IS purty up on our hill. I always told God He put us there so He could hear me BETTER. hehheh.

Wow.... quite a story.... I'd agree there had to have been some unknown (probably) pre-existing weakness or fracture. Ouch. Very sad.

...This is a mare tho...

When I first saw this pic, I said "Naaaaaaaw, that ain't no mare! Different equipment hanging down underneath". But then I realized that it was probably teats hanging there. She'd just had lotsa babies I guess.

You know I never even looked, but I swear the guy said this horse was a mare. But looking at the picture....:)

What looks like male parts, "might" be the foot of a horse standing behind this one. It sure happened in coincedental place tho, didn't it.

But maybe I just dreamed he said it was a mare....

How horrible! That kinda thing happens to race horses fairly often too but it's usually on the front legs. The video of it is just horrendous. They won't stop running and the leg is just flopping all over the place. This barrel horse probably had a stress fracture and it just gave way when he took off. So sad for the girl coz she'll always blame herself, even though there was nothing she could do.

That's awful about your fire. It's bad enough to get broken into, but to then have everything set on fire is just adding insult to injury. Did they ever catch the people who did it?

LOL I didn't notice that, either. That's definitely not Juma, though. He's shorter and stockier. The horse in the pic looks really streamlined.

Here are a few pictures from last night. Hair graciously doctored them as much as she could. The arena is covered, and the pictures just come out nearly black.

Tuffy the first one is of Lance.

The next one is Jenny, at the third barrel.

This is me at the first barrel.

Yeah - I can lighten them, but I couldn't do anything about the dust in the arena that makes all those dots.

You got your first two pictures switched... but I think everyone will figure it out ;~D

So tell us about your run! How did it go? Were you happy with your run?
