*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

With all the great places you've got to ride, I don't blame you for not going anywhere else. You are incredibly lucky!

Understand, though, that the monument is a large area, it doesn't mean we can ride right into the crater ;~D
Oh I know, but it's too bad though, huh? That would be quite a ride.

Can ANYBODY go right up to the crater and look in? I didn't know if it was a restricted area or what.

Hahahah! I wish that I had a tan. I work in a darn office all day, complete with A/C but lacking in sun. I hate wearing shorts and such because I really should have a tan by now but clearly clearly do not.
Oh BTW, I'm most likely going into Boston this weekend. I'll make sure to take pictures! I'll keep an eye out for mounted cops!

Before the mountain started rumbling again last summer, there were guided hikes right into the crater. They stopped them then, but they may be back in business now, for as long as the mountain is quiet.

I'd go if I could ride in, but I'm no hiker ;~D

I'm a tiny bit better then a farmer tan. I wear tank tops now all the time instead of Tshirts. The summer my daughter got married I started wearing them. I knew I'd have a sleeveless dress so I didn' want the line. Since that summer I wear them.

Isn't Crater Lake up there?

I think Mounted Cops are cool. That'd be a great job to have if you didn't have to chase criminals. I think Mounted Park Ranger would be an even better job. They pay you to ride a horse all day and talk to people. My kinda job!

No - Crater Lake is a different volcano, in Oregon...

Our volcano blew it's side out, it won't hold water ;~D

How far is Crater Lake from where you are? Have you ever been there?

My friend that I went on the mule trip with in Arizona was a mounted Game Dept ranger.... and he rode his range on a mule, enforcing hunting licenses and seasons. As an avid hunter, he was also a good and fair game cop.

I'm no hiker either. There's this big tree out in our Forest that everyone hikes to that's supposed to be the largest tree in the state and it's not too far off one of the horse trails, but I've never seen it because you can't ride all the way to it. It's down in a canyon so you have tie the horses at the top and hike down. One of these days I'm going to though. Famous last words! ;o)

Oh - It was a great time. The guy is a friend of my dads, and I went down to ride his patrol with him for 8 days. At the time, I had fancy wussy Arab show horses, and I spent 8 days on a mule. What a fantastic experience. I adored mules after that trip, and think they are absolutely premier as a trail mount. This is me... then :~D

We camped, his pack string was loose, just following along. He'd turn the mules loose at night to eat, leaving only their mother, a buckskin QH, in camp, and only needing to bring enough feed for her. They stuck ~fairly~ close, though he was gone a good while looking for them some mornings ;~D

Sounds like a great trip and what a great picture! Though I can tell it was taken some time ago. ;o) How old were you then, maybe 20?
