*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I just put the water in sandwich ziplock bags and then set them on the bannister of the porch (three) and then on on the floor of the porch by the cat dish.

It is incredible that it works, I'm surprised everytime I go out.

I just about did wither from the heat, just sitting and waiting. I had the folding nylon chairs with canopies on them but forgot to take my big canopy. We did have a slight breeze on and off that helped. I could never do what they are doing, I can't stay out in the sun that long.

Yes, talking to the vet before any big changes is a good idea. Then if and when you do make changes in their diet, do it gradually.

Fancy's pulse was running too high and her hydration wasn't good enough to suit Tracey. Sponging her down and getting her to drink and eat some beat pulp and hay helped that. Then, she is bad about striking herself at her extended trot and so was wearing boots. They rubbed one of her ankles. It wasn't raw at all but you could tell it was tender. It took about ten minutes to get her down so she could vet in at the hold, and almost thirty minutes at the end.

Well, Bob is a sweetheart every once in awhile. I was tickled because the lady and her friend that came with her came from Bridgeport, CA. They can't ride or train during the winter there because of the snow, so they trailer to Nevada.

They've already made plans to spend the winter training with Bob, just a couple of miles from our house. He's got a lot of riding buddies (all women) but trailering three hours in the snow is a new one :)

Here's a quick picture I took of Harley today about 8:00 this evening, to show how hot it is here.

Jeepers.... does he appreciate a hose off? or would he resent it even though it feels better when he's done? ;~D

Is be smart quietex the same as quietex? I really don't want to spend 59 dollars on a tub right now. I can get 12 cc of paste of the other for 5 dollars. I can't get any info to pull up and don't know how long it lasts.

It's hot for them here too. Mine wet under their mane and their coats aren't exactly wet but sticky.

He doesn't mind being hosed. I didn't tho. Actually, I never thought about. Rocky and Rusty were out back in the shade, and they were not sweating. Harley could have stood in the shade, he choose to stand in the sun and graze. Belle was sweating too, so I let her in a run where she could get in some shade.

A tub of Quietex shouldn't be near that much. So no, it's not the same thing.

Pictures coming. Becky, sometimes when the heat is really bad, I turn on a sprinkler by the fence. Some horses stand it it, some just stand downwind, but them seem to appreciate it.

Beginning of the ride, along the highway - Bob and Tracey up by the second telephone pole.

First vet check

Bob coming in from first vet check

Tracey coming in at the finish

Bob at the finish

None of the pictures give you much of an idea of the terrain. First leg was along the road a mile, then cut back to a mountain top, down to another highway and back along it. Second leg north into the hills, along to hwy and across, to dry lake bed, back to hwy and down the frontage road. Plastic bags chasing flies away.

Well, at 5:30 am it's cool here and there was a threat of rain. The desert temperatures change up to 40' in a day - cold at night, cool in the early morning and evening, and hot when the sun gets up.

Thanks for the pics! At least it looks like the morning was cool, they've got jackets on.

I guess the good part about the desert is you can always look forward to cooling when night comes, right?

I don't know - it doesn't work on moths but I think that's because it doesn't affect their eyes at night.
