Word For The Day, Thursday, May 26, 2005
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
[artifice \AR-tuh-fis\, noun: 1. Cleverness or skill; ingenuity; inventiveness. 2. An ingenious or artful device or expedient. 3. An artful trick or stratagem. 4. Trickery; craftiness; insincere or deceptive behavior.]
[Built by design and artifice, it fell apart in confusion and chaos. --John Gray, [1]False Dawn
This theatricality is necessary to signal Prospero's farewell to magic, and indeed the play debates that very contrast between artifice and reality, illusion and truth. --Amy Rosenthal, "An insubstantial pageant," [2]New Statesman, February 3, 2003
The smoke had cleared enough for him to see bayonets flash in the distance, behind the wall, what looked like thousands of them, the wall itself appearing to rise out of the smoke as if produced by the artifice of some magician. --Kathleen Cambor, [3]In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden
The intuitive connection children feel with animals can be a tremendous source of joy. The unconditional love received from pets, and the lack of artifice in the relationship, contrast sharply with the much trickier dealings with members of their own species. --Frans De Waal, [4]The Ape and the Sushi Master
]
Etymology: [Artifice comes from artificium, from artifex, artific-, "artificer, craftsman," from Latin ars, art-, "art" + facere, "to make." It is related to artificial. ]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
[Watching McPain engage in obligatory artifice on this morning's Fox & Friends was illuminating. It really is all about him and his movie.]

I'm so glad you're feeling better!
It is now - but it wasn't at all until late this afternoon.........may the beautiful weather hold for the weekend - although I would like it a few degrees warmer
That is so sad. Prayers for the family.
i predict you will be complaining of heat soon.
Thanks. I expect I'll be even better if the weather holds :)
Kick me if I do :)
I WILL kick you. LOL.
i'll try, but my leg won't reach!~
I just got back from rescuing my SIL's hubby-I'd given him directions to one of the other marinas when he said he wanted to try his luck fishing at another pier, and off he went in his truck. He called me on my cell phone and said he was lost trying to get back from the marina, but he was at the intersection of two roads and told me what the road sign said. I told him to stay put and my SIL and I went off to where he was to lead him out again. What he did was go off down a side road to look at at a neighborhood on the water with several pretty log homes. He did not realize that all the roads that go to the water end there in a cul-de-sac making it easy to get lost. He didn't catch any bass, but he did catch a nice catfish which he cleaned and gave me for my hospitality. I put it in the freezer for hubby and I to have next week. Hubby just called and is on the way, so I'd better go start putting shrimp salad together-back later...
I'm sure YOU would!!!!!!!!
I'm sure you'll be able to google up an image to reach :)
i am still waiting for the chinese. i predict first words out of xshub's mouth is what it cost....
Nope - first thing he will say is YUCK.
no, he has no idea what it costs, bc he has never gone, never paid, never picked up. he will be griping about that i bet.
ok - you know him better than I do. Chinese for this house is usually about $70.
There's only 3 of us (well 2 1/2) and Chinese takeout can easily run us more than giong out for dinner.....I'm notorious for $30-$40 take out bills.........of course the left overs do wind up feeding us for a week :)
I cna't help it - I can never make up my mind - which is why I prefer Chinese buffet... $17 feeds the 3 of us with a tip!!!
Dan, what is the name of the Chinese joint on West Ave?
We found an OK one in Pocomoke that we would occassinaly go to. But now a really good one has openned up across the highway from it in the WalMart shopping center.
It's smalland doesn't have as large a selection as the one we always went to in Dover, but the food is really fresh - it doesn't sit in the steam trays for hours on end.
10k is buying me hardwood (real, not pergo) in the entire first floor, replacing a sliding-glass-door, a door to the studio, and a raised floor w/hardwood in the studio. and some tile.
Alicia is one HECK of a shopper.
...but the Mustang is getting pretty expensive. LOL.
