Word For The Day, Thursday, May 26, 2005
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
[artifice \AR-tuh-fis\, noun: 1. Cleverness or skill; ingenuity; inventiveness. 2. An ingenious or artful device or expedient. 3. An artful trick or stratagem. 4. Trickery; craftiness; insincere or deceptive behavior.]
[Built by design and artifice, it fell apart in confusion and chaos. --John Gray, [1]False Dawn
This theatricality is necessary to signal Prospero's farewell to magic, and indeed the play debates that very contrast between artifice and reality, illusion and truth. --Amy Rosenthal, "An insubstantial pageant," [2]New Statesman, February 3, 2003
The smoke had cleared enough for him to see bayonets flash in the distance, behind the wall, what looked like thousands of them, the wall itself appearing to rise out of the smoke as if produced by the artifice of some magician. --Kathleen Cambor, [3]In Sunlight, in a Beautiful Garden
The intuitive connection children feel with animals can be a tremendous source of joy. The unconditional love received from pets, and the lack of artifice in the relationship, contrast sharply with the much trickier dealings with members of their own species. --Frans De Waal, [4]The Ape and the Sushi Master
]
Etymology: [Artifice comes from artificium, from artifex, artific-, "artificer, craftsman," from Latin ars, art-, "art" + facere, "to make." It is related to artificial. ]
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Comment Section:
Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
[Watching McPain engage in obligatory artifice on this morning's Fox & Friends was illuminating. It really is all about him and his movie.]

WFB's attempt to emulate us ; ) No pushing at the door please!
I've got on long sleeves and a sweatshirt.
I'm sorry you had such a bad day at work - but that is very sweet of xshub to pick up Chinese for you.
I need to go outside and help hubby with a couple of things - I'm glad I threw some chicken in the oven earlier - now all I have to do is reheat it and make some rice.
Be back later.
you will do fine. don't be a big silly! just leave your < b >'s alone!
It is surprisingly beautiful outside, today. Who knew?
Jeez, you're no fun!
she's still fun, silly - she said leave YOUR b's alone, not her b's
Rough day at work. My employer got a call from her sister in KY. The neice's elementary school teacher is a proud mom of a service man in Iraq. She lost her son yesterday.
Typical woman, only concerned aboot her own pleasure. I can see a class action lawsuit building here...
that is so very sad. prayers for them, the kids will no doubt take it hard.
hope your word is properly salacious....
The artifice of Sen. Dodd is mindboggling......."Mr. Dodd said he actually supports an up-or-down vote on Mr. Bolton, but is being forced into a filibuster as a protest against the administration.".........<a href="http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1411188/posts#14Democrats threaten a filibuster on Bolton.
As Hillary squishes up to the mirror, she picks up "Old Crusty"; trampled in the corner amongst the belly button pickings; to attempt to hide her hideous cankles in another act of artifice, before she waddles up to the Senate floor to vote NAY!
i like having multiple words myself, so if you want to include an oddball along wiht a regular one, i think that is cool. the more words the merrier!
Okie-dokie.
Very sorry to hear that. Prayers for the soldier, and his family.
OMG aShep, it's the DINNER HOUR and you are bandying about some atrocious imagery there! crikey!
God bless that family-that is so sad.
