SWARM the Minuntemen invites people from all over the world who oppose racist violence to join the Electronic Disturbance Theatre action on May 27th, 28th and 29th, 2005 to engage in a virtual sit-in on the MinuteMen website during their "Unite to Fight" Summit.

Read on for the Electronic Disturbance Theatre call to action.

"Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door."

- “The New Colossus,” by the nineteenth-century American poet Emma Lazarus inscribed on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty.

Dear sisters and brothers,

Electronic Disturbance Theater (EDT) in solidarity with Swarm The MinuteMen action will hold a 3 Day Virtual Sit-In starting on May 27th to May 29th (2005) on the MinuteMen Project. We call on all you to join us and let the MinuteMen Project know that hard borders are alien in an age of global interdependence and to the ideals of liberty as a “golden door” that is open to all. An ideal that so many have died trying to reach.

To Join The Virtual Sit-In On Starting on May 27th Click: http://www.thing.net/~rdom/ecd/ecd.html

Why we must swarm the MinuteMen:

For Víctor Nicolás Sánchez, Adolfo Pérez Hernández, Daniel Barrientos, Santos Orozco Aguilar, Raúl Hernández Soria, Sandra Edna Durán, Jesús Medina Contreras, Edgar Venegas Brambila, José Gutiérrez, Melquíades Gómez Baca, Martha Rivera García...

Myth Number 1: Immigrants take jobs away from Americans. Myth Number 2: Most immigrants are a drain on the U.S. economy or treasury Myth Number 3: America is being overrun by immigrants. Myth Number 4: Immigrants aren’t really interested in becoming part of American society. Myth Number 5: Immigrants contribute little to American society.

Facts to dispel to these myths from the American Immigration Lawyers Association: http://www.aila.org/contentViewer.aspx?bc=17,142

We call on you sisters and brothers from all over the world who oppose the MinuteMen Project and in the name of the 3,500 women, men and children who have died crossing into “The Land of Liberty” since 1994 to join the Electronic Disturbance Theatre action on May 27th, 28th and 29th, 2005 to engage in a Virtual Sit-In on the MinuteMen website during their "Unite to Fight" Summit.

Who are the MinuteMen:

The MinuteMen are a non-governmental group of people vowing to patrol the US/Mexico border with guns in order to stop migrant people from crossing the border. They represent an intensification of the trend of violence towards migrant people and people of color that has increased since 9/11/2001. While they claim that they are not violent, their very use and display of deadly weapons is a violent act in itself. How can guns be used to detain people without being violent? Already there have been numerous reports of people being forced to lie on the ground by the MinuteMen and being forced to have their pictures taken with MinuteMen volunteers, recalling Abu Ghraib style dehumanization.

SWARM the MinuteMen Group Statement:

http://swarmtheminutemen.com/

While the MinuteMen publicly claim to be non-violent, we here at SWARM know a different face of the MinuteMen. We've received numerous death threats and threats of violence filled with racial slurs. We plan to publicly release these soon to let everyone know the exact kind of hatred the MinuteMen are acting as a lightning rod for, attracting it and focusing it towards migrant people.

Just as important though, the MinuteMen are a clear result of the violent, us-versus-them mentality promoted by the Bush administration.

We are intervening into and dancing with the communication systems of the MinuteMen because along with the physical violence they are creating, they are extremely conscious of the violent power their messages have and they had any measure of success thanks to the complicity the corporate media. Their communications are a critical part of their mission to send a message to legislators that more militarization of the border is necessary. Their images and words can't be separated from the violence of their guns, and both must be stopped.

We refuse to support the United States government's attempts to find a scapegoat to blame this country's problems on while it bankrupts our social services, wages wars on the world, sends our brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors to die and profits off of the whole plan. Who stands to profit from a more militarized border? Will the same corporations that made billions in government contracts off of the war in Iraq like Halliburton and CACI be the same ones to profit from the war on the border?

We must stand together now to say that this country is made up of millions of people of many different ethnicities and cultures and that is due to migration. Migrant people have human rights, regardless of the government's and the racist's attempts to deny that fact. Until the United States has a sane immigration policy that allows people to move as freely as capital and goods do, we will continue to struggle.

Why should you join the Virtual Sit-In On May 27th 2005:

For Benito González Cruz, Benito González Serrano, Javier Rojas Bracamonte, Juan José Romo Zetina, José Luis Garza, Roberto Acegueda López, Román Robles Rojas, Reynaldo González Corona and the thousands of other people who have been murdered for simply trying to cross the border into what is now the United States and which was once Mexico.

These idiots don't realize that raising a racket is going to frighten the
very illegals they so much want to cross. This is the biggest favor they
could do the Minutemen, particularly if they do it in an area where the
Minutemen aren't operating. They'll discourage the illegal crossers in
that area just as the presence of the Minutemen would.

Your post made me think of the underground railroad that took so many of the slaves to safety, before the Civil War.

Also of the efforts in WW2 to rescue the Jewish and Americans in the war zones, to help them reach safety.

The only problem for these commie fools, is that they did not learn our history in school and are following the scenes from a Hollywood movie.

From my reading back in the days of reading books, it seemed that the person being rescued simply faded into the surrounding area.

They did not march down main street, banging on a pot.

These fools are dangerous, as they are lacking common sense.

(again -LOL- this is my opinion).

thanks for that very interesting and informative response. i agree with you.. and have studied this for 20+ years. and i am wondering if a lot of the socialist/communist infiltration problems in our fed gvt isn't rooted in some of these fed agencies that are not elected positions. the socialists like BClinton appoint appoint appoint.... and these people have alot of power and infulence, even during a conservative administration. although i'm starting to really wonder at the agenda of even the current one.. the more i learn the more cynical i become.. LOL

You are very correct in what you say above.

Google will turn up a list of 53 'Socialist Democrats' we
have elected to congress and I once found a web page on a
Congressman's .gov website for the branch of the Socialist
Democrats that he belongs too. (sorry, I forget names).

Using google play around with the different ways to ask who
the elected socialist/communists are in government.

It was an eye opener.

I have in my digging, found a communist party, called the
'New Party', that bragged on how many local offices they had
filled with members, they suggest starting with the dog catcher and working up to the President.

I have found where the communist party called for a new name, due to the fact that communist was a tainted word.

I found after the last election, a group of communists, who
were discussing changing the name again, as the word Socialist now means communist to most people.

What upsets me, is that these hard communist groups, are based in our universities.

I had high hopes for Bush, when he took Powell out of the
State dept and changed CIA leaders, he has tried to weed out some of them. Now to get rid of the rest of them.

If he really cleans house, then the ones he can't touch, as the congressmen and women, will kill him on anything he tries to do.

... my friend said that he was probably scared by the protesters who were really violent and angry.

The guy who was arrested for supposedly running over a couple of protesters was released and will not be charge after the police determined that no one was hurt and that the protesters had actually attacked the car. By the way the protesters were throwing soda cans filled with marbles at the people who were attending the lecture. So, I guess the claim is true, the Minute Men do promote violence. Strange thing though, the violence they promote is always against themselves.

I have heard that while still patrolling the border in Arizona several of the Minute Men were pushed by ACLU people who were trying to provoke a violent response.

This is an old tactic of the left. I attended a rally to kick off Ronald Reagan's re-election campaign. Some demonstrators were trying to provoke a reaction by screaming things about Reagan. Eventually, a huge guy, over 6ft tall and close to 300 lbs got a Reagan supported all riled up. Funny thing is the Reagan supporter was about 5'2". My friend, a girl, actually stepped between the two combatants and told the Reagan support to sit down. She probably prevented a riot that day.

Hey SB, thanks for the reminder...

I really should post on my "Moving" vanity that we are settling in to our home (yeaaaay!), about to make our first mortage payment (booo), and discovering the never ending list of maintenance chores that come with a large yard, a pool, and home (BOOOOOOOO).

I appreciate you thinking of me. Take care neighbor, BTW, you are in Plano, right?

You may enjoy this. Below is one "progressive's" plan for August at the So Cal border. I'm getting entertaining visions of Ward Churchill leading a rousing chorus of Kumbaya.

source: http://deletetheborder.org/?q=getinvolved#comment

re... Early August will probably be one of the hottest times of the entire year, so we'll need to bring truckloads of water... As for content of the event, I definitely think we should have concerts and/or dissident speakers. We should also have a information stand in case we run into any immigrants, to let them know where there are job opportunities and how to survive in America, as well as tell them what their rights are and who to contact if anyone fucks with them...so they don’t end up as slaves, like these people (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/picture_gallery/05/americas_florida_tomato_picker/html/1.stm )

re We should try to get some big names to give speeches, maybe Noam Chomsky, Ward Churchill, Howard Zinn, etc. I also think we should focus on the issue of racist immigration policies within the context of capitalist globalization, as both issues are very much connected. - http://www.humanitarian.tk By humanitarian at Sat, 2005-05-21 02:54 | login or register to post comments

Really, a virtual demonstration is a joke.

It appears the "activists" think so as well

source: http://sandiego.indymedia.org/en/2005/05/109063.shtml
(comments at bottom of page:

Thats about as dumb as the communal hunger strikes where people sit in shifts and promise not to eat for a whole 4 hours, then say how the strikes been going on for a month.
Loquacious

Questionable
I think that focusing too much on virtual activism (this seems like an oxymoron) might actually undermine serious efforts that happen in the physical world to improve our living conditions. It is questionable, to say the least, to think that taking down a web site for a couple of hours will bring about a positive social change (like stopping this bloody military machine, for example). We can use the Internet to spread information, but let's not fool ourselves to think that "virtual activism" can somehow replace real activism. I do think "virtual activism" has a few qualities though; it makes its participants feel like they are doing something without risking their own sense of comfort.
Mr. P

Hmmm...
I think you should think about what the goals of a "real protest" are. Is it to spread information? Can marches and rallys really stop a war? In the past Electronic Disturbance Theatre's actions have been on the front page of the New York Times and have created a response from the Pentagon. How often is a "real protest" that effective in getting the word out and forcing the machine to respond?
reader

This is seriously one of the lamest things I've ever seen. I think it's really telling that the right wing nut jobs can get people to go sit out on the border all night long, and the counter on the left to that is a frigin "virtual" sit in.
