District Attorney Sam B. Currin, III attended Wake Forest University in 1968 and received a BA in History. At Wake Forest he served as the football manager and a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. In addition he received a Juris Doctorate degree from Wake Forest University Law School in 1971.
He was admitted to the Bar in 1971 and began practicing law as an associate in the firm Hollowell and Ragsdale, P.A. in Raleigh North Carolina. In 1972, he was an associate of the law firm Watkins, Edmundson, and Wilkinson in Oxford North Carolina. In 1974, he became the Special Counsel at John Umstead Hospital in Butner North Carolina. Later, in 1977, he became a Solo Practitioner in Oxford North Carolina. In 1979, he became an Assistant District Attorney for the Ninth Prosecutorial District in Oxford North Carolina. In November 2001, Sam Currin was appointed to the office of the Elected District Attorney for the 9th Prosecutorial District.
His civic activities include, but are not limited to, being the Past President and current member of the Board of Directors of the Kiwanis Club, Past President of the Young Democrats, and Jaycees, and the Past Chairman of the Red Cross and Heart Association. Furthermore, he is a Member of the Adult Council of the Boy Scouts and the Granville County Historical Society.
He is a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church of Oxford North Carolina, a member of the vestry, and past Sunday School Superintendent. He is presently senior warden. He is married to Bettye Dove Currin, has two step sons, Robert C. Kemp of Greenville, North Carolina and Travis F. Kemp of Wilmington North Carolina. Lastly, he enjoys playing golf, tennis, hunting, and reading.
