I have to give my possibly frozen to death rose a thorough lookover to see if it is truly a total loss.

Don't give up on it until mid summer. Depending on the variety, it may survive. My Canadian Explorers and Bucks have a few wilted leaves but they'll be okay. I'll have to prune a bit off, which may delay the first blooms, but they aren't lost.
