I think they call these "cross pit spreaders". I've seen them in the lignite mines in East Texas.

This machine is a bucket wheel excavator. It is used to remove the overburden (dirt) above coal seams in Germany.

There was a good discovery or history channel show a while back on this particular move. They ran in to a minor snag crossing a fiedl, but the move was successful.

Look the next big ole SUV. That looks like it will keep a safety conscience SUV owner at peace.

Just slight overkill. It can remove all the dirt in an agerage yard to a depth of about 25 feet in an hour.

I have no clue what the hourly cost is, but the company feels the cost is justified so that can get at the coal seam.
In the US, there have been some amazingly huge electric shovels used for stripping. The Silver Spade comes to mind. If I had a decent connection speed, I would post a pic or 2

How would you like to pay the electric bill on that.
IIRC, it has approx a 40 cy bucket capacity, equal to about 3 big triaxle dumptrucks in 1 scoop

First thing I thought was, "That's not a back hoe. That's a ditch witch."
I saw later in the thread that it is used for mining. Still wish I'd had one of those around to dig pipeline ditches in the West Texas oil fields. Bet that puppy would just eat up that cursed caliche I had to bust through with a pick-axe.

Every morning at 7 oclock
There are twenty tarriers a-drilling at the rock
The boss comes around and he says, Keep still!
Come down heavy on the cast iron drill
Refrain:
And drill ye, tarriers, drill!
Drill ye, tarriers, drill!
Well, its work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down behind the railway
And drill ye, tarriers, drill!
And blast! And fire!
The boss was a fine man, down to the ground
But he married a lady six feet round
She baked good bread and she baked it well
But she baked it hard as the holes in Hell
(repeat REFRAIN)
The new foreman was Gene McCann
By God, he was a blame mean man
Last week a premature blast went off
And a mile in the air went Big Jim Goff
(repeat REFRAIN)
When next payday came around
Jim Goff a dollar short was found
When he asked what for came this reply
You be docked for the time you was up in the sky
(repeat REFRAIN)
