It's very tragic about the hikers. I have a couple more details. Their bodies were found in a slot canyon, the width above them was 16 inches. Apparently they were in 15 feet of water in wet suits. They think the hikers were caught behind a log and couldn't free themselves. They died of hypothermia.
Unfortunately, we get deaths in Utah this way. Utah can be a dangerous wilderness and even the most prepared hiker or outdoorsperson can be caught unaware.
The waving cowboy on the border between Utah and Nevada was erected today. Unfortunately, he doesn't wave anymore, to save money. He can be seen from both directions.
I remember the waving cowboy from my childhood. We were living in California, but would drive to Utah every summer so that my dad could work on his master's degree at BYU. We knew we were close to Salt Lake City when we saw the waving cowboy. Such memories. I also remember the town of Winnemucca, because of the name. And how boring Nevada was to drive through.
