Before ever setting up concentration camps to kill Jews, the Germans starved hundreds of thousands of their own citizens to death. These included the mentally retarded, the senile elderly, disabled World War I vets, orphans, and the terminally ill.
In the orphanages, children were selected for starvation based on such "abnormalities" as being bedwetters, or having ears that stuck out.
The newspapers of German towns were filled with inordinate numbers of obituaries in the late 30's. People wondered why so many were dying, when there were no epidemics.
The Nazis, however, found starvation a tedious method to achieve their aims. They appointed an elite group to study quicker methods, and thus the concept of the "shower rooms" with cyanide gas came into being.
