Yes, it makes perfect sense and may well be the reason she lost her previous foal. Don't breed her until it is totally cleared up, as it could infect your stud also.
It's something that can be fixed but it is really heartbreaking when it happens.

It may be that she was drinking so much because she was running a low grade temperature from the infection.
When Farah lost hers we also were mystified on how it could have happened and us not see some signs. I am still mystified, truth be known, but our area abounds in coyotes and eagles and hawks. Just seems like I would have seen some evidence on the mare herself.
