Alarming...........yes it was, I have never seen it before.

We upped her feed recently and she put on weight instantly, but I think Adge, being as big as he is is draining her, he is now 4 months and eating grain well, I think it may be time to wean him to help Misty. She has always been on the lean side even though she has always had plenty to eat. They are all under the vet for everything, he is due to come out again in June, there has not been any coughing and she is grazing just fine. I have just been out with her again and no sign of previous problems. I easily panic with animals, especially if deaconjim isnt here.... : ) I called the vet and he didnt seem to be too concerned, he said to call him again and he would come out tommorow if it occurred again. The fact that she was grazing he said was a good sign. Do you think 4 months is too soon to wean Adge? He is getting the same feed as the others and seems very solid.

It's hard to get the mares to ever gain weight nursing, you're lucky to keep them at a good weight.

It'd sure be convenient to wean them together, for both of their sake. Am I wrong in thinking Adge should be approaching 5 months now? Wasn't he born middle of Dec? And Thunder in Jan? I might hold off till the youngest is at least 5 months and then wean them together.

How are you going to do it? Have you given it any thought? You might start some conditioning now by feeding them separated in adjacent pens with safe fencing between, like your pipe fence (no wire) and letting them be separated for short period, and hour or so at a time at first while they eat that way. I dunno... maybe the others will comment on the wisdom or lack of it, in that idea.

Sounds to me she just got a snoot full of something that irritated her nose till she got it all sneezed out:)

Horses can have allergies to things.
