They have really tried. It was just a gelding problem at first. All others seperated and the barn where the babies are is still off limits. Water tanks and stuff have been disinfected. If this is viral, medication won't help except for complications. The ones not treated seem to recover about the same as the ones on it. I was there when she asked her vet. He wasn't sure and treats symptoms. He gave me a long inservice about reasons for him not doing labs. Anyway I'm going to ask my vet if he doesn't think it's viral to do a culture if it's not too expensive. He may have already drawn blood as far I know. Everytime before he always has. I just need to find him.
I've had two kinds of vets... I've had the minimalist type that don't do more than is absolutely necessary, and I can appreciate the smaller size of their bills, but I do want a curiousity about minimization and recovery from my vet. As the boarding stable owner, I would never have been satisfied with any reason to not do labs. Not when there are many horses who need to be protected at that point.
It sounds like SL does have strangles. Is she on antibiotics? If at all possible, have your vet - in your presence - examine her. Take his advice, not the advice of the barn vet - who should have done a lot more a lot sooner. Okie did not soundlike he had strangles
