Once a horse catches it then they have antibodies, right? I don't know what is going around. The owner is who thinks it is strangles. I am concerned about SL in a different way though. Okie was very ill and I really was concerned he wasn't going to make it a few times but she has me more concerned. With him he was hot, diaphoretic, confused and had trouble walking. I was afraid he had encephalitis. He slung snot everywhere but he was breathing ok. SL seems to get choked with movement. She will cough and then chew and chew. She wheezes a little too. She isn't hot and walks ok though. She also feels like she has the mumps. Unless they all have it and I never noticed she has two hard knots under her lower jaw. The one on the left about a large marble size. The one on the right about ping pong ball size or maybe slightly smaller. I am worried about her airway. I was going to stay out there tonight but the owner said there was nothing I could do and that she could suffocate but most older horses don't.

Those are lymph nodes. They swell when they are fighting infection.

I don't understand the level of uncertainty about what is going around this barn. Veterinarian(s) have been there, drugs are being dispensed. What are they treating? I'd have a long talk with the vet tomorrow, in person and try to get some solid information, I wouldn't settle for what it might be.

Good Lord, I am so sorry you are having to deal with this. What a mess.

One of my pastures connects with a boarding stable. I wonder if I should keep my horses out of that pasture?

I sure hate to hear about SaraLee. It sounds like Strangles to me too. I think they can lance the swollen glands and let the puss out if they get too big, but sometimes they'll rupture on their own. I know you're frustrated at the barn owner and vets. I would be too. Maybe you'll get some answers today.
