A horse is registerable as an Appaloosa if it has one registered appaloosa parent and the other parent if not registered appaloosa, is a registered quarter horse, thoroughbred or arabian.

If it does not have appaloosa characteristics (striped hooves, white sclera around the eye, mottled skin and/or a coat pattern) it is registered as NC and can be used as breeding stock only - not to be shown in ApHC shows. You can get around this by having the horse CPO'd (Certified Pedigree) if both parents are registered apps.

Unlike Paints or Palominos - an appaloosa is not a color breed, it is a blood breed, although color is a characteristic of the breed. In other words, a solid colored app is as much an appaloosa as is a loud colored appaloosa.

So, if a horse has the CPO, but no obvious markings, is that enough for an unrestricted registration? Can they then show then alongside Colored apps at ApHC shows?

There were a lot of people, who would agree with you, about the showing of solid colored Appaloosas, me included. So much pressure was put on the ApHC, by the big boy breeders to show these horses. It was suppose to "improve" the breed, by outcrossing. In a way, I am sure it did, but color did suffer. Sure, there is a chance you might get a solid even with both parents being Appaloosas. My understanding was that this was only suppose to last a few years, (the showing of solids).

I have not gotten the Appaloosa Journal/News for a long time, don't know if that rule changed or not. That reminds me, I still have all those magazines in my basement. Dating from the 70's...lol
