I noticed in your pictures that all the ladies in your group had halters under the bridle. Is this something you do all the time? And the purpose I suppose is to be able to tie them up quickly? Inquiring minds need to know. Being a somewhat new rider I need all the help I can get

I do that on trail rides sometimes too, or at least bring the halter with me, and yes, it's so you can tie up for lunch breaks, and also better lead them over something if needed.

Yeah, quite a few people I ride with do that if we're going to be out long enough to stop for a break or lunch. I personally prefer a combination halter/bridle. It looks better and isn't as bulky as having a halter AND bridle. Blade's looks like this...

The bit unsnaps at the cheeks and you can take it off so the horse can graze and be more comfortable.

Old Cavalry horses wore a halter under the bridle. The halter lead line was carried back under the pommel of the saddle, loose, with the end hanging out beside the riders leg. Should you fall off your horse, another rider can ride up beside it, reach over to the saddle, grab the lead line and bring the horse back to you. Never tie up your horse with the reins of the bridle, no matter what you see on tv or in the movies. If the horse should spook he could get a cut tongue or worse.

Good luck and enjoy your horse.
