This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
If she's gonna grey I bet you see it as soon as she first starts to shed around the eyes.... I have more experience with Arabs turnin' grey than roans. ;~D
I'll take her either way ;~D
DIL is walking on air :) so it will be awhile before she will consider letting her go. Her registered name will be SE Original Sin - no barn name yet. I'm thinking I'll name her sister, Lacey, TE Gold Lace on her papers.
Well, we already have a "Cyn" around the place, so don't make her barn name too close to that ;~D
Sounds like Waylon is doing great at your cabin, apart from the down hill part. Sorry to hear about your finger, hate to say it, but it sounds broke. Excessive swelling is a sure sign.
Hope Waylon does better for you next time you attempt the hill.
I also hope you have a great relaxing time at the cabin. Photos please! : )
Sorry to hear about the hill but good for you getting back on. The rest sounds like yall are doing well. I agree with Rose. We need pictures:')
Thanks, somehow it just seems to fit her. :)
We have been talking about how we are going to get the horses thru Houston. I think we will probably do a lot of night traveling and tie them outside the trailer until day break once we get there.
Why is there a problem going through Houston?
It's different from say San Antonio and Austin. It's stop and start and people will just cut right in front of you. There are lots of on and off ramps and it's nothing to have someone suddenly decide to get off and cut 3 or 4 lanes over. No matter what time it's always busy. We are talking about going thru about 1 am. That will put us at the ranch pulling the traler about 3. I don't want to put them in the pasture at dark so I thought we could just unload and tie them to the trailer til day break. The other option would be traveling during the day and stopping to rest before Houston but that's extra hours in the trailer.
I think heat is a factor too in the daytime, right? Strong suggestion you may not have thought of. when you do go to turn them out, walk them by hand around the whole perimeter before turning them loose so they see the whole fenceline and don't run the wire.
Were you going to get some panels and put a round pen up? If so, just put them in that until daylight. It would be safer to make a nonstop trip if possible, instead of tying to the trailer in a strange place. I've had horses break halters, lead ropes and the welded trailer ties when they felt like it. If you do stop to wait awhile, just leave them in the trailer - give them some food and water.
Yes, we always walk the fence line with new horses or our horses going to a new place before turning them loose.
I hadn't thought of heat but that's a good point. Ok, I can do the fence walking. I had two reasons for not wanting to turn them out until daybreak. The first as you said, I want them to see their new environment and secondly, I know this sounds bad but I want pictures:')
I don't think I can afford the panels by then. We are having to get the water on, build a shed, wire etc. I don't plan on taking them out until we get there but after we are there I was going to tie them to the trailer til daylight. We have the option of leaving Thur evening or Friday morning. We are leaning Thur. We may have to stop and rest awhile though.
If you walk the whole fenceline they can see the whole perimeter, have seen the whole scene, and are a lot less likely to just bolt like they are a loose horse getting away with something when you turn them loose. It takes the excitement down to a safe level.
I was thinking I probably need to walk them both ways too.
Maybe, maybe not. How big an area will they be turned out in?
