*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Even though nothing can happen, I'd separate them for the time being. Even unshod hooves can leave a mark and Bay could potentially get hurt.

Well, for the moment I've let them all out into the big pasture. There's better grass coming in out there and it's keeping all their minds otherwise occupied ;~D

Cyn's the one with a few marks on her rear, but nothing serious.

I don't really have a setup that is good for ~keeping~ them separated on a regular basis, so I am sortof hoping this has been tried once and learned from ;~D

Oh, and one more thing about lunging:) I never ask for a lope or a gallop on the lunge line. I don't ask for a walk either. They trot. Trotting is the hardest gait for them to maintain. Walking is showing laziness which I can't allow, and loping or galloping is letting them pick the speed which is not allowable, IMO. I'm in control not them.

IMO, if you ask for the lope, or let them lope, you run the risk of them speeding up and doing their own thing, and it is very hard to get them to slow down to a nice speed on a lunge line, so I just never let it get started.

Lunging is about control, not exercise, not to wear them out. JMO:) And I know most people think my philosiphy is a little fanatical, but my horses are all very well behaved, and worse came to worse, I really believe that a beginner could ride any of my three.

I like to do all three gaits, and also good woahs, on the lunge. I also like to introduce them to trotting poles and cavaletti on the lunge. I have them do everything on the lunge that I expect under saddle.

I change direction and gaits frequently, but I don't lunge a long ~time~ either, if they are doing well. It's really not good for their joints, or for Bay's feet, to do a lot of continuous circling.

Since you really can't seperate easily, I'd leave them to work it out on their own. I think it is smart to have them in the biggest area you can.

I don't think this one time will teach them. My kids had a gelding that did that on a regular basis to mares. Maybe we were lucky, but no one ever got hurt.

Can I ask you a question, and you understand that I'm not trying to be offensive:)

I just don't get spending all that time lunging for exercise, but not riding because it's boring not having alot of room??? I find lunging boring. Even if I had only an arena to ride in which I really don't like, I'd rather ride there then lunge, especially to do ground poles and cavalettis.

LOL!!! I used to have a gelding that would do that. I say let Bay and the girls have their fun. He'll learn when he can mount up and when he can't. He may get a little skined up in the process, but with nobody having shoes on, it won't hurt much more than his pride. Oh, and look at it this way, you won't have to clean his sheath for a while. ;o)

Good morning,
Personally - I think you should seperate him. His behavior isn't appropriate, he could get hurt, a mare could get hurt, and lastly, what happens if he's around someone else's mare that is in season?

Heh... no it's not offensive at all. I know it's lazy to be too bored with it to go to the trouble of saddling up and riding just to ride around the pasture. We should do it more than we do, just to have them in better shape when we do get the trailer. And really ecurbh could use the schooling. I had thought about whether he should take some lessons (probably also when we get the trailer unless there is someone who will come here) just so he can force himself to learn some of the horsemanship skills that he won't get on trail. It's sometimes easier to learn and take direction from someone who isn't a spouse, and someone who is a better teacher than myself.

But back to lungeing.... I enjoy lungeing, I can watch their movement a lot better than I can under saddle if there is something I am looking ~for~... I don't lunge Bay a lot, because of his feet, any more. I lunge the pony and ask her for a lot of precision and I challenge her with complex tasks and jumping on the lunge, because I ~cant~ ride her.

I was only really interested in lungeing Cyn to teach her how. I don't really ~want~ to ride her much, if at all, I want to leave her for ecurbh, unless there's a need for me to see or correct something.

I ~think~ he's only doing this because Cyn is in full heat and was backing herself right into him. They've settled down to graze now and I'm watching, but if his feet leave the ground again, I'll put him in the back by himself.

Prior to today, in all the heats since Cyn's been here, and in years past with the pony, he's done a lot of following and lip curling and back scratching, but never gone that far. The pony used to squeal get really mad at him for ~not~ trying. These are pics I took earlier, before the big show. This is what I've seen a lot of in the past.

These poor girls... Their hormones are just ragin'.

This is such a wonderful picture.

Your mare's coloring is really neat, I like how her mane sunburns and makes her look exotic. The foal does look like she'll roan, with the light underbelly, she looks like your other filly at birth.

He's an old man.... he just needs to be careful he doesn't pull something... and if he tries that again in the pasture out by the road, he might cause an accident ;~D

LOL...my son and husband are sitting here gagging at us women commenting on the "cuteness" of anything baby:)

Charlie said, what's pretty about any foal, they're gawky, big jointy wobbly things:) You know he has a point. But I STIll think they are pretty.
