The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread FIVE

*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Consider yesterday your shakedown cruise. Sometimes it takes them a couple of those ;~D Is he young

He is 4 the end of May. It was really stupid of me to buy a young horse, being a new rider but I fell in love with him. He was better today.

It was really windy and I had not rode her in 10 days. That bug still making it's way thru the horses though so I'm just keeping an eye on her. Did you see that I found a daddy? I'm gonna breed her in Feb.

Well, just go slow with him, and yourself! Expect a few shakedown cruises with him after any time off at his age.

I hadn't washed them yet. This pic was about a month ago. Cindy better but she's scared of Coochie. I was surprised they were sleeping together. That cat rules around here. He hasn't attacked my leg again though. I walked by the other day and he just kind of stuck his paw out :')

Sarah Lee getting whooped up on too and that may be rattling her. There is a new mare out there. SL all scuffed up. Today she was in the back pasture and didn't come to me which is unusual. There were several horses surrounding her. I had to peel them away. I was down to 2 and she was standing by the fence and they had her pinned in a V. I shooed one away but the other was still blocking her. All of the sudden SL took off running. I'm thnking great, but she ran around the horse blocking her and turned sharply and came to me. I don't like them treating her that way.

He snuck up behind him and popped him good. My husband said he wheeled around to see what hurt him and my son was standing there with this impish grin on his face and the cattle prod in his hands. I wish you could see my son, he's dennis the menace personified. Dishwater hair, sprinkle of freckles across the nose, etc.

Oh boy. You might want to consider moving her to another barn. The other horses have singled her out to pick on, for whatever reason, and she's scared. I made the mistake of not moving a horse that picked on the lower ranking horse in my pasture (both belonged to me) and the lower ranking horse was injured so badly I had to put him down. I knew the lower ranking horse was scared of the other horse and I should have kept them separated. I have alot of regrets over that.

Good morning.

Those cattle prods do hurt. We use to have one when we had roping cows. They put out quite a charge, lights up the fillings in your teeth.

I rode Rusty yesterday evening. We did about 20 minutes walking, trotting, and cavalettis. Mon. we are doing some trails.

What happened?

I took him out for the first time this yr.outside and he was acting really spooky. He kept raising his head real high like he saw something and would stop and almost rear. I just kept circling him, didn't go out on the trails like I had intended. I just kept him in the outside arena.

Yesterday took him out again and he was better but someone mentioned he might have become barn sour over the winter. Will go out again today. I won't do the trails until I'm comfortable that he'll listen to me. Cindy, I know we started about the same time, how's it going with you?

When you take him out on trail are you going alone?

If you can, let him follow a safety minded friend on an older steady horse for the first couple times... the buddy system is good safety for both green horses and green riders!
