I found a BBC sight explaining Imbolc (Also called Candlemas)... found here. It was a Celtic holiday celebrating Brigid, the Goddess of Fire. Pagans celebrate Imbolc today. Christians renamed it as Candlemas to celebrate the Virgin Mary.
