*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

I've watched the first video! It is interesting. Are all of them going to be this same horse? By 'first ride' I gather from watching that this is not the first time the horse was saddled as I expected, but rather the first ride by this trainer on a horse who has been brought in with behavior problems.

My observations though, have less to do with the horse's problems than the environment. For one... if I were riding and evaluating a horse with problems that include bucking, I'd be real nervous to be in that arena. It's not even closed in, and is surrounded by jagged rocks. I guess this rider feels pretty confident she's not going to be thrown.

And what's with the girl on the pony.... Here we are with this horse, fussing around the arena, and this child on a pony trots by.... too funny.

Hi, ecurbh:), glad you're still alive.

As far as Bay having done barrels before, will that's good:) I wasn't really speaking of "pounding" work. There is alot of slow work involved. I would think the slow work would be good for him even if it was some easy circling, and you changed directions frequently.

When I"M home by myself and am going to ride, I just always called someone and told them I WAS RIDing and what time I WOULD call them back when I finished, that way if I didn't call back they knew to come find me:)

Becky

(my cap key sticks, and I'm tired of backing to fix it:), I'm not yelling)

OH, and if you are hesitant to ride Bay, ride Cyn.

We need more people on here talking about riding.

Well, I don't really know if he did them ~well~ he just did them. I don't think the guy or the gal that dumped by on him were real serious horsemen! :~D

It wouldn't be bad to do running games if he didn't already have problems, but he does. Long walks in the woods are the best exercise for him. If I weren't so spoiled, I'd enjoy riding him here on the property more.

Well, teaching them to do them "well", like I said takes lots of slow work.

Pole bending is alot more straight line riding rather then circling. In fact I have always liked poles better.

Get 6 6ft lenghts. of 1 1/2 PVC pipe, six coffee cans and a bag of cement. You can make your poles like that.

Yes, they are doing the same horse in the first few videos. When I saw "first ride" and saw what all they were doing with that horse, I was thinking how nuts they were, then I realized they were working with someone else's problem horse.

I wouldn't ride a horse like that in an arena, either. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't get on that horse without tons of work on the lunge line with side reins and get her used to the headset that they are wanting. I do think she's riding with the reins a little tight, the horse does great for the cowboy on the trails. He's riding on a loose rein and he's walking, trotting and loping quietly. Hardly looks like the same horse. That headset that the english rider is trying to achieve could be uncomfortable for that horse, not all horses have the conformation to do that.

I know... I'm just never gonna run barrels on him, so there isn't a lot of point! I'd enjoy schooling him English more, and even that just doesn't seem that important in his career. He's a trail horse now. What does sound like fun to me is really building some fun trail obstacles for us to work on. We've got logs, obstacles could be built, even bridges and such would be fun. We have that big dip out in the back forty, I sure wish I could figure out how to fill it with water ;~D

I think she was riding the horse hard on the bit to emphasize and exaggerate the head problems the horse has so it would show up in the videos. I am going to guess the owners are trying to use this horse in dressage and poor riding techniques have made the horse resistant to collection. Like you said... on trail when the horse wasn't being pushed, she really didn't have the same resistance issues.

I might find a different horse for dressage and use that one for trails or playdays. Towards the end of the videos, the horse is doing want they want but isn't happy about it.

I don't think dressage is going to be that horse's forte.

WEll, yeah:)

I'm getting a complex about talking about riding:)

I've been using a full check snaffle on Rusty when we do arena work, and my correction bit on trails. The snaffle gives me a lot of turning power, but his stops aren't as crisp as with the correction. We work on stops alot on the trails.

I looked at kimberwicks the other day at PetSmart. I'd really like to try one, just hate spending the money, when it's probably close to an argentine snaffle. But it's funny how a slight variation can make a big difference.

A good trail obstacle, is opening and shutting gates from horse back. Does Bay side pass?

Good morning everyone! I finally have something to contribute, imagine that. I signed my girls up for riding lessons. They start next Wednesday. They couldn't be happier.. and they really earned it. I told them it was necessary to buckle down and hit our (homeschool) routine hard, and they've been working their little tails off.

So, our new friends "Sadie" and "Hot Stuff" are the lesson horses and we're up for a big adventure!

That is exciting! If you can take pictures of them riding, do. It'll be fun. Are you taking lessons with them? :~D

It's really hard to tell scale or steepness, but this is a hill that is about 8-10 feet and pretty steep. Would be a great trail obstacle to clear out, it's just filled with tanglesticks now. It'd be super cool if I could get the bottom to fill with water.

Here it is with Bay in the foreground to sortof give scale.
