*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

No way what? Talk to me! That it's not common? Or that it's common in paints? I know a lot of blue eyed paints... typically though the blue eye is on white face or medicine hat-type markings. :~D

I knew one blue eyed appy, much lighter blue than yours... he was a few-spot leapard... and was out of the old leapard mare who taught me to ride. Her name was Melody. Alkar's Melody Echo. I'll never forget her. :~D

I just scanned his picture:

Not at all common in appys unless they have some Bright Eyes Brother or Mighty Bright in their background, which this guy doesn't. Yes, common in paints.

Not happy about it at all - maybe I can sell him :)

Back in a few, serving late dinner.

Are you encouraged or discouraged by this? You don't sound sure...

How do you feel about him having blue eyes? I think it would be cool but I was just wondering if it's a desired trait.

Lots of people believe they don't see as well with blue eyes, and that it is more sensitive to bright light. I don't know for sure. The paint mare that I rode had one blue eye, and I didn't notice any vision difference or flightiness about things on one side or the other.

AWWW. He's just special and unique. Don't sell him:')

I've been over on the sabino thread , trying to decide if legit or not before I send in 35 dollars. There was one area about blue eyes. Could he have a sabino gene? They say it is found in all breeds.

Sabino SITE:') It's a color registry that Dutchess and I were talking about awhile back for Sarah Lee. Want a link?

No, I'm unhappy about it. I don't much like the stud my mare was bred to, I think he's crazy as a loon myself, and I don't like his build. I was very pleasantly surprised that I got color on the colt, although that mare always throws color so I should have expected it.

He already behaves like a nut, now a blue eye (which usually indicates some kind of paint genes) but nothing in his background that accounts for it.

It's surely possible. A lot of applaoosas apparently carry it, but the bloodlines you usually see it in is Might Bright and Bright Eyes Brother lines. I don't have that in the pedigrees I don't think.

I am going to try to get some good close up pictures of him and post them to the appaloosa project, to see what they think. They are doing a lot of work on appaloosa genetics.

Wouldn't your mare have to have the recessive trait too though?

Well, I think he's a pretty foal... and some colts just behave like colts! Health and vigor, you know!

He'll roan out likely like momma, you think when he sheds his foal coat? He looks grey around the muzzle already.

I don't know to tell the truth. She's had four foals prior to this one, none with blue eyes. I need to talk to the stud's owner and see if he's thrown blue eyed foals.

I don't think he'll roan out - her foals generally take the color of the stud. Our current arguement here is his color - stud owner says dun, I say a chestnut bred to a chestnut can't be anything but chestnut. Another thing I'm going to ask the appaloosa project. His muzzle is yellow.

Well, he'll be quite striking indeed if he stays red.

Is there a pic of the stud online somewhere?

Well, remember the old story about 2 brown eye people can have a blue eyed baby but if both blue and a baby has brown eyes better check the milk man? :') I don't know if horses different but I would think she would have to be recessive also and mated to a recessive stud that could never throw a blue eyed foal on his own so he might not have a history. I could be way off though since I'm comparing horses to humans.
