*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

No my chickens run loose. They're main purpose is to eat ticks. If I kept them cooped up it would defeat the purpose of my having them.

But my garden is enclosed:), they have gotten in there on occasion, and can really destory alot in a short time.

I don't have a problem with ticks but that's good to know that chickens are a way to control them if I ever do. I do have a snake problem and have thought about getting a pig for that purpose, but they are soooo destructive!

I have been truely amazed how well the chickens keep the ticks gone. And I mean gone. They are really bad here, before I got the chickens everytime you went out you came back with 3-4 on you, and the dogs were covered. I have NONE now. I just won't be without chickens for that reason.

Guiena (sp) hens are suppose to be excellent snake controllers. They won't be so destructive as a pig.
I'm not real sure if they kill them or just alert you that one is there. But alot of people out here have them for snakes. Snakes have never realy been a problem for me. We've had an occasional copperhead and rattlesnake, but not enough to warrant worry.

LOL:) that's cute.

One other thing about letting your chickens out...the eggs will be more nutritous. Free range is best. But I understand if you have dogs that might be a problem. My dogs were raised with them and learned to leave them alone at a very young age.

Guinea hens are good watchdogs, too. They sure let you know if anyone shows up on your property. Maybe I'll see if I can find some of those today.

There's something that is appealing to me about having farm birds, but my Gidget would be a struggle to train. She's lethal. I've ~almost~ got her leaving the squirrels alone just by hollering at her though, so maybe I exaggerate how hard it would be.

Of course... once I had chickens, I'd have to worry about defending them from the coyotes... and I think I'd rather sleep at night.

Have you seen your monster coyote again?

Good morning everyone,

Cindydawg, a link for you and some pictures -

Called Toy Haulers, with living quarters. Why couldn't your toys be horses instead of bikes or 4-wheelers?

I've got my horse saddle. But it's still pretty chilly, the wind is blowing.

But I'm going anyway, trails on Harley.

Everyone at my house is so sad! Chris used to play at our county fairs back in the early 80's. He'd come every year - it started to feel like he was family.

He was truely an wonderful man.

We did:). Back in the woods the wind wasn't so bad, and it seemed warmer.

We did about 1 1/2 hours. I'm taking it slow, we are all so out of shape. But this is the first time in a long time I've come back and not been hurting, so we're making progress:). I figure if I'm getting better so are they.

Now I'm going to go on a quick loop with Rusty then do a quick arena workout.

Our bassets are in a large enclosure, the one the mares foaled in, they would just love to get their teeth into a chicken! Our Australian shepherd and english setter dont touch. They may chase for a bit of fun, but that is all.
The eggs are delicious, as golden a yoke as you can get!
I wouldnt be without them~

Would it be appropriate to ask my farrier about an internship to see how he does

That's how most farriers around here learn the trade. Most of 'em don't have the money to go to a school. But I don't know how the apprenticeship details work out. He may have to give the guy a percentage of the money he makes while he's working for him, kinda like they do at beauty shops.

have them dump an inch of chicken poo on it... Oh - that'd be popular with the neighbors

That's what we do. There's lots of chicken farms around here. And you're right, the neighbor's really appreciate it. When we spread it on the pasture at my BIL's place, the neighbor kids were outside playing and it didn't take them long to decide that playing inside was much preferable to playing outside. It was that way for quite a while, every time it rained. Plus, here they compost the dead birds in with the poo, so you get that smell as an added bonus. But you've never seen grass so green in all your life after that. You could really tell if they missed a spot with it.

one year they had a "human" waste disposal company come and spread "fertizler" over their pastures...

Yuck! That reminds me of my younger days when I used to play Rec League soccer and the Parks and Rec department did that one year on the soccer fields. Man, if you had to slide, it made you smell like you'd crapped your pants. It was gross! But like you say, the grass was really green.

All,

As promised, here's a couple of my cruise pictures. They aren't horse related but they turned out ok...

Here's us in Cozumel. Our ship is the one on the left (the Carnival Glory)..

I thought these bouganvillas were really pretty...(and yes, I look like a doofus in that hat, but it was HOT!)

This one was taken from the top of the Key West lighthouse, looking back toward the dock. Again, our ship is the one on the left)

A fun time was had by all!
