Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

If there are any horse lovers who don't 'know' Chris, and don't understand WHY it's heartbreaking to lose this voice, I have this 'challenge'.......
PLEASE, go out and find ANY Chris LeDoux CD or tape. Pop it in your stereo, close your eyes, and LISTEN. Let his horseman's spirit wash over you.

Yup, Bay sounds classic navicular but at his age, nobody's perfect. It's the young ones that go lame that are heartbreaking, especially when they belong to your kid.
Oh well, the shoer will be out bright and early in the morning. Maybe shoes will help.
I'm sorry to say I didn't know him.... I know few 'country' singers, but my mom had liver cancer and I sympathize.
It is particularly heartbreaking.
Bay's on pads but not eggbars... farrier thought that's all he needed so far.... I really don't know better, as long as it works.
Hey, if you've landed on something that works I sure wouldn't change. If you've not even gone to a bar shoe yet, you've got lots of options if things get worse.
I have a question. My 23 y/o son wants to learn shoeing for "our" horses. It would be a hardship for him to be off work to go to school in Oklahoma right now. Would it be appropriate to ask my ferrier about an internship to see how he does before going any further? If he agreed how much should I offer him?
He is rounding his toe, and he has correctively raised his heels with better trimming.
I think asking your shoer for an internship is a great idea! If nothing else, your son could keep your horses trimmed up. I don't know about payment. Perhaps if your son did some of the grunt work, sweeping, getting tools and whatnot, maybe you wouldn't have to pay him at all.
Anybody else? Opinions?
By the way, my shoer is well known in this area, he does all the big farms and he's the best shoer I've ever had. He never went to shoeing school, he learned the skill from another farrier.
that's the way the world used to work. It's really a shame that we can't do that more often.

Chris is a part of the thread that the Lord has woven through ALL of our hearts/lives.
I dunno... It'd be worth asking. I think horse-shoeing is as much art as science, and it'd be good to work under more than one farrier, even to get a wide variety of clientelle.

So true. Helping out other people without accepting or expecting payment is a thing of the past, in most cases.
Well I would be uncomfortable asking him to do it for free. He's a teacher and shoes on the side. Maybe Josh can talk with him the next time he's out. He's the one of three that likes horses and guess who he has his eye on? :')
One of my other shoers was a fireman. He retired and moved away.
Sorry about your mom. Mine too lost her life to liver cancer, at a young age of 53.
ohm - Sorry for you as well. Very coincidental, it wasn't something I heard about until my mom, and her brother got it soon after as well. Genetic or environmental, we don't know.... My mom was 58.
Yes, I drive with a CD of his in the car all the time. He always put a smile in my heart and on my face.
