*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

There are lots of nice digital cameras out there. My daughter uses one of those little teeney tiny ones and it takes fine pictures. I have a Canon EOS D60 and it's tons of fun but it's way too big to take riding with me. I'm thinking of stealing my daughter's camera.

I have a Nikon Coolpix 775, and think it's a great little camera, and as High-res as I usually need for my uses. It's a 2.14 mega-pixel.

Nikon Coolpix 775 Digital Camera

They run in the under $200 range, and they may have even higher mega-pixel cameras for that, that don't carry the Nikon name. It has an adequate zoom, where I've been able to zoom in and then crop photos to get quite close to the action from a fair distance.

The big money decision is to go to the next generation camera that has an instant shutter and up to 6+ mega-pixels. The cameras in the under $200 range all have a second or so lag time between pressing the shutter and when the picture is taken, and while that doesn't matter so much taking slow posed shots, it makes taking action pictures harder. I still do OK, you've seen my pics of the horses running, but I end up taking a lot of pictures to get just the right moment in the horse's movement that looks pretty. You get a lot of ~eh~ shots in horses, at the wrong point in their stride, and you miss a lot of moments because the camera wasn't ready when the action happened.

I think the instant click cameras are coming down in price, but are still in the $600 and up range. My husband is a hobby photographer also, and he'd like one of those better cameras, but I still think when my little one dies I'll replace it with one just like it for things like trail rides and other knocking around shots, because we wouldn't want to risk the really valuable camera with that kind of abuse.

I have used and abused my Nikon, dropped it, gotten it wet, and it's held up really well so far, though I think it might be beginning to fail now after 3 years of rough treatment, there are occasional errors where the lense doesn't open properly and I have to fuss, pray and restart it till it does.

Good morning, guys, Wow, this thread is long! ;) While I'm not currently an owner, I am a lifelong equine lover. And I'm enjoying this thread very much, especially the photos!!! So please continue sharing them, they are eye candy to people like me. Thanks very much for posting the photos of your babies and telling us about them. Maybe someday I can have my own horse again. Meanwhile I can enjoy looking at yours! :) Have a great day.

That Canon looks good. It must be a single lens reflex cause the price on expresscameras.com stated with the camera body and had a starter kit that included: Starter Kit

I'm assuming that your camera is outdoors a lot. Does it take abuse and keep on ticking?

Does that price look about right for that starter kit?

Good morning everyone, I have a Sony Cybershot - it's pretty old now (4yrs?) but I changed the memory card in it to a much larger size and can take photo quality pictures and not run out of space. I take a lot of horse pictures though and occassionally dog agility so I need that. It was kind of expensive when I bought it. There are a lot of much more reasonable priced cameras on the market now.

John Holmes - I'm confused but I don't want to know so don't enlighten me :)

Welcome to the thread, glad you are enjoying our pictures. Jump right in, although if you came in about the John Holmes posts area, you might be confused too :)

Hope everyone gets to ride today. Went out when I got home last night to play with the baby. Well, really to get some more imprinting done. He is going to be a handful. Beautiful sunny day here today, highs in the 60's predicted.

See Sharn? It's for the good of the thread that I nag about pictures! welcome to the thread, totherightofu :~D

Here's a few pics of my Bay... I just love to photograph our horses. cowboyway, just to continue the conversation about cameras, I think along with the camera, you need to think about getting and learning to use Photoshop. Most of the pictures I take have been edited a little bit, to improve the lighting, crop them in, and in the case of the second shot, I even painted out the fence behind the horse to try to move it from the caliber of 'good snapshot' to 'calendar worthy art'. Digital cameras and photo editing software go hand in hand to make your pictures better.

Without the fence, we get the horse in a fantasy environment, free of the restrictions of man... I particularly liked the way Bay's whole body was rippling, and the way his tail looked like a wing in flight.

Sometimes, even with shutter delay, you can get lucky by capturing just the right moment, as in this shot of my amazingly flexible wonder pony who can scratch her own butt... almost ;~D.

Hello,

My farrier just left. I'd forgotten today was the day. Having an early lunch then I'll be off to ride. I'm going to start with Rocky on trails. Then if I'm up to it, I'll work Rusty in the arena, and maybe a quick trial loop.

He was funny in a scary and bizarre way.... I was fascinated and repulsed ;~D So strange.

Bay has just as much skin as a running QH would have... and less muscle showing under it. ~stomps foot~

It's true they can get a lot more visible veins than cold bloods, but they don't look like that ALL the time, only when they're HOT!

you need to think about getting and learning to use Photoshop

I use a MacIntosh at home and it came with some kind of photo editing software. I've not used it much, so I really don't know what I've got.

Anyway, first step is to get the camera. That will be the hard decision part.

Ok, I guess:') I'm in week two of orientation. I weigh in at weight watchers tonight so I'm chatting instead of eating. It's soooooo slow. I have got to start exercising more. I wanted to share my list of "doesn't count" that was given to me with yall though. I highlited the ones that are horse related and I disgree with not countable. Add to it if you want

Beating around the bush

Jumping to conclusions

Climbing the walls

Passing the buck

Throwing your weight around

Dragging your heels

Pushing your luck

Making mountains out of molehills

Hitting the nail on the head

Wading through paperwork

Bending over backwards

Jumping on the bandwagon

Balancing the books

Running around in circles

Eating crow

Pulling out the stops

Adding fuel to the fire

Wrapping it up at the day's end

Opening a can of worms

Putting your foot in your mouth

Starting the ball rolling

Going over the edgeyikes!

Picking up the pieces

Counting eggs before thay hatch

Calling it quits (never)

making hay while ths sun snines

biting the hand that feeds you

butting your head against the wall

This is the one that I have and it has taken some abuse, but not alot. I'm pretty careful with it. Takes incredible pictures and you can use different lenses, something you don't find with lots of digital cameras.

The price on that camera you are looking at, the 10D, looks like a good price to me.

Just came in from riding Rocky, we only went about an hour. I really don't like riding him:). He's so laid back, and pokey. Rusty is such a happy medium. He walks faster, and can be a pill on occasion, sometimes a bit jumpy but doesn't put a lot of energy into it, so it keeps the ride interesting. Harley walks out real good, and I've only had him spook under me one time. So he's pretty good too. But Rocky just doesn't get excited about anything.

That's like the one ecurbh wants...

I used to take a lot of 35 mm pictures, thinking myself something of a talented portrait photographer then... I had an assortment of fantastic lenses. I miss that.
