*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Previous threads:

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - thread ONE
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!
The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!

heres a photo of her, shes looking scraggly because Adge puts his legs over her back (from the side) and rests his head on her. Strange but he leaves sweet feed on her back! See her ribs? They are not really bad, I am just getting concerned, the vet didnt think it was a problem, and we are feeding her loads of mare and foal etc.

As you can probably tell it was pitch black outside and Misty was not being co-operative. She hates the flash on a camera~!

Well, she doesn't look radically ~too~ thin from what we can see... Take a few pictures from all sides tomorrow so we can see her better.

All foals like to climb all over mom. Especially stud colts... When are you going to geld them?

Like Becky said, it's hard to keep a mare with a foal on her up to weight. We always bump the feed way up and pretty much free choice hay. Just increase her feed a little and see if that helps. She doesn't look bad though at all.

I think the vet said he usually gelded at 5 or 6 months.
I took some more pics, I'll see if you can see her head on in any.

A nice side view where we can see her neck, belly hip and butt would be good...

Kind of hard to tell from the picture. Her ribs don't seem to be showing that much. Take some pictures tomorrow.

What is "alot" of feed? What kind of scoop do you use? 1 lb coffee can, 3 lb coffee, a real scoop:). Take a picture of your feed too:).

I just had a baked potatoe blow up in my oven:(...LOL...I opened the oven to check on it and touched it with a knife and boom it blew up all over the place. Mack heard it clear in his office.

I guess it was done:)...

I'd say :)

I did that once and didn't get it all out - boy does it smell. I can't remember what it was but one of the big dinners, Thanksgiving or something, and it blew part way through my cooking. Stunk up the whole house.

LOL....Hey that sounds good:)

No, actually here lately I've enjoyed cooking again. With only two it's alot easier.

But my steaks on the grill are about done, and everything is ready, so now we're having to wait on our potatoe...

I'm starting to smell something. I turned the oven off, but it's still hot. I'm hoping when it cools it will be dry and just brush out.

LOL Your request is nothing to HairOfTheDogs! The other pics didnt come out very good and I dont think I should stumble back outside in the pitch black with a broken foot and broken arm trying to take photos of a horse that hates it!

The feed we have now is wonderful, its much better "mare and foal" than we have been getting, I could almost eat it! We use 2lb coffee cans to dump the feed into buckets, and she gets 2 of those at a time plus lots of hay and we have grass growing too. (approx 6 quarts on a bucket?) Is this enough do you think? Its more than was suggested to us.
ps a photo of the feed will have to wait though~ LOL

ROFL that is so good!~ Has anyone on here "not" had that happen? The picture in my head has me rolling on the floor~ Sorry if you were looking for sympathy to go with those steaks, this is just too funny!~ : D

That sounds like plenty to me. If her ribs showing no more then they seem to be in the picture, she's probably fine. IMO, you just have to watch them close, and make adjustments. Some horses just need more then others. I probably would keep watching close, and if she continues to go down bump her more. But she may stablize now, I think it's around the 3 month old mark that the mares milk starts to decrease in nutrional value, and the nutrition goes back to mom. So she's about there.

Well deconjim has said its normal, the vet wasnt worried but I am a born worrier and hate to see animals with anything wrong. I am sure she will be fine, the photo was pretty accurate, but being able to see them at all gives me concern. I may up her feed just a smidgen even so.
The horse feed bill is bigger than our grocery bill a week! LOL

I've never had one do that before. I knew if you wrapped them in foil to poke holes in the foil, but this one wasn't wrapped. I guess you have to poke holes in the skin too:). Learn something new everyday.

Everything is done now, so I'm off to eat. See ya.
