*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

LOL....I don't want any more "stuff":) My trailer is just fine, and I don't want to sell anything.

Yeah, gone, flew the coop, not there anymore....

Beth told me her husband had given it to her for her birthday too:(.

Speaking of her too, her pony is about to explode. She has really gotten big the last two weeks, and I noticed today, her hips are really starting to sink.

Those round pens are valuable... but I wouldn't have guessed someone would walk off with it. It's like stealing a trailer... they aren't often locked up, but it just isn't done :~\

I wonder if it was someone she knows or owes money to.

Nice pics! looks like you had some fun.
Our bottom fence is low enough that Sally had to crouch to get under, so she got caught straight away. Our little puppy howver can go right under but when he has his tail sticking up....OUch! The cats dont seem to learn, and even though I love them to bits, its funny to watch their hair stand on end when they run away........!
We have wire as well as the two strands of white tape, and that is "hot" too. The kids havent got bit yet, but I am sure its going to happen. I have signs up for anyone that can read or takes the time to do so.

Thanks, I'm really happy with his color. Finally got some sleep and getting ready to go back out and visit with them.

Well, if you had fun this morning, it wasn't a waste of money. Sometimes it's worth it just to get out with others at the end of a long winter.

what was that meal you gave your mare after she had foaled? Bran mash? It might be really useful to post it on here for those who have foals still to arrive. I know I would have welcomed it : )

Stealing trailers is pretty common around here. In fact that was why Beth called. She says someone else in the neighborhood had a utility trailer stolen last week. I guess we have a theif amongst us.

In 25 years we've only had 2 things stolen from our yard, my sons trike when he was little, and my $300 push behind weedeater, just 2 summers ago.

I've always thought having the dogs and the fact that being self employed there is mostly someone here, and anyone trying to figure our schedule, when we are gone, wouldn't be able too.

The round pen was where she couldn't see it from her house. Or even be able to hear anything. I've thought several times, the way they did it wasn't smart. But I did notice there was locks on the gates where the horses are, guess just not on the other, or maybe they got lax about locking, or maybe the theif just cut it.

Oh my. That was one brazen thief. Nothing else got taken? The lady must feel really vulnerable about now.

I just always feed my new mammas about a half a bucket of bran, mixed until about like oatmeal with hot water and molasses mixed in it. They seem to love it. Farah ate hers while lying on the floor as we toweled off the baby.

i fed Sugar and Misty just Mare and foal feed and made sure there was plenty of hay. your meal for Farrah sounds like a really good "pick you up".

I have a question for anyone that can give me an answer.
Misty with 2month old Adge is looking a little ribby. She is eating plenty of Mare and foal and hay. The vet said she looked well, but I dont like to see her ribs at all.
We have started adding a cup of corn oil to her feed because a friend suggested it. Is this normal on an older Mom? Sugar is doing fine, but then again, Misty never got as big as she did. Any suggestions?

Mares that have had one to several foals do tend to get a little 'sprung' in the belly, I'd look to other signs of her weight, ie, back, rump and neck, besides just her ribcage.

This is JMO, but it is harder to keep weight on a lactating mare. They need lots of feed. While lactating Belle's amount of feed went from 1 1/2 cans 3 X a day to 2 cans 3 x a day with a scoop of calf manna added in each feeding.

But don't forget, I use complete pellets so they don't get hay. The scoop I use to measure the calf manna comes in the bag, I think it's 1/2 lb scoop.

I bumped her up to that, and will again this time, as soon as she foaled.

Be sure to watch that giving her that much corn oil doesn't give her the runs, unless you gradually built her up to it, not sure from your post.

I've heard that was a good way to put weight on a horse, but my horses would never eat it.

We wormed all ours and put them back out.... was good just to work with them a bit, but it's getting kind of late to ride and ecurbh's watching some kind of game.

It's time for me to worm again too, and give Belle her next Rhino shot.

The pony went really fast... She usually plays head-bobbing games before I can get it in there... I got it in there while she was reaching for the apple in ecurbh's hand ;~D
