*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Wow... what a mane. Will be glamorous when she's summer slick and gets some weight on.
YUP, only 2 y.o. Sad, she's just a 'baby'.
Pete, our horse-dealing friend, lifted her mane when they were moving her to the new field, and pronounced her a mustang. BUT, the next day, hubby lifted her mane and didn't see a freeze brand. Sooooooo....????
When she was putting us 'through the moves', she sure looked like she was gaited. But maybe because of her hoof length?
Yes, I'd like to know where the auctions are for Texas. There are people who wait around at the killers to see what the buyers bring in but I can't do that. I don't want to be anywhere near Beltex, although I hear that you can't tell it's an abattoir from the outside.
Max flex have portable systems for camping etc, by portable i really meant that when we move it will be easy to take with us! go on maxflex.com (think that is right) and browse. I was quite impressed. Most of the shipping is included in the price too!
We got the fast fence? system I think it was called. I have so much going on at this computer at the moment, i hardly dare refresh, or look at history in case I lose all my work! Been a busy day for me.
That is so sad, makes me realise how blessed we were. Sounds like Farrah is going to have that foal tonight..........my guess is 9:45pm! LOL
Good for you, if you look beyond her condition as of now, i think you will find yourself with a pretty horse. Our horse Sugar was in very bad shape and I paid lots lots more for her because I couldnt bear to leave her where she was because she would have died. If I rented a field as big as you have, I think deaconjim would have a fit, cause he would know that whatever sob story would come my way, would get a home! : )
I so hope you are right :)
I like the tape and the rope kind too, for its visibility and it is really easy to put up. It's only as strong as the charge on it though, so I'd make sure it packs a punch. And the more strands the better. I like them close enough together that a horse won't get a head between. If they can get a head through, they're gone, even if they do get shocked on the way out ;~D.
The fiberglass poles will not offer a LOT of strength, and it might pay to put in a few t-posts along the runs to keep it from being floppy.
The white tape has a useful life of only a couple years, with rain and sun cycles, it does get brittle and rot. The posts and insulators are easily re-useable, but I wouldn't count in the tape lasting well enough to move. We replaced all my original tape last summer with new, and it made it three years before it broke at any attempt to tighten or re-tie it. It's not that expensive to replace... and a lot easier to work with new than when it's been taken down and coiled up.
DIL just called. The vet she works for says the symptoms match Listeriosis. She also said it lives in the soil and will become prevelant during wet weather. She also said that here we may have a problem this year with anthrax and pigeon fever again - same reason.
Well the latin name for Strangles is Strepoccocous (sp) equi. I don't know if it can be transmitted from horses to humans, though
Pretty picture!
We have some corner posts and extra strong poles for strength along the way. The charge will be high, and the kids will be warned. We are also posting signs. We chose the wide tape in white for visibility for the kids as well as the horses!
Thanks for your advice, we havent used it before and will put up some hardwire too, we have some.
Smoky is coming Saturday and this is where he will be put. He is a large horse, but very gentle and has never been known to break out of an enclosure or try. He belonged to our trainer/farrier.
That poor poor baby. we rescued a horse from the killers that looked a lot like her, though his coat was in better shape and his feet weren't so long. He was a quarter horse, and as soon as he got some food into him, he was a changed man. I'll see if I can find the picture of him to post.
"Our 11y.o. daughter named her Twister. THIS child is the most tenderhearted and 'deep' child I've ever seen. I have a feeling she'll want to claim the horse as her own. She's been drawing pictures of her. LOL"
Sounds like my daughter who will be 11 end of this month! : )
Reminds me of the Scripture about 'out of the mouth of babes'.
We adults think we 'know better' and 'have a handle' on things. But, then, along comes a child like this, who still has that handle on God...and instinctively lives/walks/talks, HIS way.
They'll only forget the warning once ;~D
Our fence is really interesting... You barely get a zap at all if wearing rubber shoes... but if you touch the fence with your hand and then touch the ground too with the other hand, it punches you. I learned this from my husband the human fence tester.
That's interesting to me because I think other chargers I've had would zap even in rubber shoes... I've been hit by them before by accident, but this charger is a "low impedence" charger, designed so that it won't ground out if grass or other interference touches it, the way the old kind will.
Good to know if horses are ever wearing rubber booties.
Back from my ride. Beth was actually on time:), the weather is beautiful and we rode for about 2 1/2 hours. I took Harley.
Becky
Hey Becky,
I'm having dinner wth the Oklahoma Fancy Dancers tonight, and thought of you beacuse well.. they're from OK! Hehehe.
THAT's where you've been. Riding, like we all should be!
I went out and set up tubs to feed outside... trying to simplify our feeding routine before our trip to AZ so our farm sitter, who is not a horse person, can feed horses without going inside with them or having to put them in stalls. Now I'm going to feed them this way the next couple weeks so they get used to the new routine by the time we go.
The horses are going to have to be outside if weather is fair enough. They always have the lean-to, and they'll be blanketed, so I'm going to instruct her to not worry about putting them in unless it is really bad. She's a good heart, just not very experienced.
All I did was get rubber feed pans and drill a hole in for a rope that ties to a fence post. That way they can't drag it out of reach, and she can pull them up and empty out water, dirt, etc from the outside before filling them. I think I'll tell her to just toss hay over the fence. It's more wasteful than using the hay racks in the lean to, but it keeps her from having to be between horses in there at feeding time.
The only horse that might get short-changed is Cyn, because she is fed the most grain, and Bay will chase her out when he finishes. She eats faster though, so we'll see tonight how it goes. Pony finishes grain first, but she's also the bottom of the pecking order.
Any interesting things happen?
