*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I hate it when people cancel on me, without a valid reason. I had one lady cancel at the last minute because she had a headache. Her husband's a doctor, get some morphine or something and let's go!

Tuburculosis (or however you spell that) can be passed to humans from animals, maybe that's what they meant.

I've been doing research on strangles this morning as I didn't think it was zoonotic, either. So far, everything I've read says it's not. It can by passed from horse to horse by human contact, though. If you touch a horse with strangles you need to wash up really well before touching a horse that isn't sick. You also wouldn't want to use the same brushes, buckets, etc.

Your old timer needs some vet books. If he says rabies or ringworm can be spread from animal to human, he's right. ;)

about the whisper syndrome scare

I have spoken with the State Veterinarian's office in Tennesee, and they have heard nothing about it. I just spoke to the State Vet in Kentucky, and he told me that all he is aware of is 4 cases of neurological herpes at a facility in Michigan where 4 horses had to be put down, and possibly some cases in Canada. He also told me that this was not uncommon, especially at this time of year. I have sent them both a link to this thread so that they can investigate further, and they are going to let me know if there is anything to this.

At present I just trail ride, Melody is 22 years old, in great condition, but not enough for long trail rides, just 6-7 miles around the neighborhood. I am looking for a good quiet quarter horse. I go to Ag Direct and browse and dream...

well, I've not gotten word back on that from the person who should really know, so don't know what it is . . . if it is a sham, it is indeed despicable. I'll let you know what I find out.

HEY, MOMMADOOO!! WHOOHOO!! Good to run into you (or your picture, anyway!) here! How's the Darby kitten(s) doing? Ya'll take care -- happy trails!

He could VERY WELL need to brush up. Reason he said that to me was because my kids always go barefoot. And he said that if they had a cut or such, that they'd pick up tetnus, because horses are known to be carriers. It seemed to make sense to me since the tetnus shot is/was made out of horse serum.

Strangles ..........we had bought a horse with strangles. Oldest daughter took care of her. She ended up with strep throat. Both doctor and vet thought she may have gotten it from horsey dearest! (same germ they said) BUT.......

Thanks for the update, I haven't gotten to the other lists yet this morning.

I'll let you know what our state vet has to say as soon as I hear.

Hey, Hair. Do you mind if I post a pic of the new horse? It might be rather upsetting to some.

Tell me about the portable electric fencing you guys are getting... I've seen small portable systems to use while camping, but nothing that would cover a couple acres... What does it use for posts?

Good morning everyone.

Friend of ours (the one who had sold the mare that lost the twins, also owns the stud that our mare that's due is bred to) called this morning.

One of her mares foaled last night, about three weeks early. The foal was born dead. It really does appear to be a bad year for foals. Farah still pregnant, being watched like a hawk. She was dripping milk yesterday so hopefully soon here.

Melody is a thoroughbred and I find she drops weight like crazy if I am not careful. I work her about an hour in the round pen every day, and then a nice two-mile ride at a walk, equine senior and oats morning and night. Hay at choice.

Hope she stays healthy and well.

Arabs seem to hold weight better.
