*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Tuffy where does "click here" go? It should go to terri.org. There was a legitamate request made by her Dad awhile back but I don't know about individual e-mails. Cyn, OfF, please see post 3859.
A few years ago, when West Nile was first surfacing, FReepers were 'connecting the dots'. They presented some VERY convincing evidence that seemed to indicate bio attack. Starting point was Plum Island.
I DON'T want to look like I'm wrapped in tin-foil, but could this be something that needs reported to the 'feds'? GRANTED, horses are NOT a vital commodity to the US citizens. (like beef/pork/etc) Could it be the horses are being used as a 'test run'???
And WHO EXACTLY is this John Holland???? Is he somehow connected to the makers of Naxcel? If he's NOT a vet or govt agent or terrorist, WHY does he think everyone should report to HIM and keep HIM apprised of the situation?
LOL... maybe those questions are 'paranoid'/tin-foil hat-ish. But FReeper is too deeply ingrained in me.
One more thing.... if it WAS a virus, WHY would it respond to antibiotic treatment??? Antibiotics do NOT help in a virus attack. (colds, parvo, aids)
Hmmmmm.
Does anyone realize that 'strangles' is a zoonotic disease? Tetnus, also. And I THINK shipping fever, but DON'T quote me on the S.F. (I can't remember that one for sure)
I don't know, I was afraid to click on it.
Well, west nile is a virus but part of the treatment is an antibiotic. Why, I don't know.
I didn't know that, thanks. It may be that it targets particular infections that penicillen does not, or that might have some immunity to penicillen.
Fabulous picture of Tuffy though! and of George... I can see that he is a curly, beyond just being winter shaggy. I wish I'd have taken pics of my friend's horse... he was curlier than a Bashkir.
Strange indeed.
George is just starting to get this curly, his hair was only thick and long. It really has been an long, ongoing process, nothing overnight. Look how furry his face is.
It could be the same one that was sent out by Newsmax. It reads the same way, but without knowing where the $ is going I can't say for sure.
***Please Read and Disseminate
If you are a veterinarian, please do not assume you know what this is until you have read this entire report. Horses are dying of this infection in as little as 12 hours, and multiple deaths on a farm are the norm.
THIS IS NOT MOLD RELATED, IT IS CLEARLY BACTERIAL
What's new....
This is more alarming by the minute. The vast majority of the cases have occurred in the last 60 days and the area is increasing. The extent of this has grown to include Minnesota, Wyoming, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and up state New York. I have updated this sheet so it can serve as a reference for vets. We now have 4 survivors and all were started on Naxcel early. The two cases that were started on Naxcel later than 12 hours took much longer to recover. I no longer believe penicillin is effective.
Botulism is no longer a viable candidate, despite the fact that many of the symptoms are a match. There is no classic paralysis of the tongue despite the fact that there are problems chewing and swallowing and botulism is unlikely to respond to antibiotics except in the rare case where the bacteria are in the animal producing toxins. In that singular case, penicillin should be effective but apparently is not. It is also far too pervasive to be botulism. The latest guess is a new strain of salmonella or a new bacterial agent. Tests for salmonella have been negative, so if it is a new strain it does not fit the mold nor respond to standard therapy.
About 80% did feed round bales, and nasal discharge has been added to the symptoms, although it is only reported in a sizeable minority of cases, it might simply be overlooked. ******
It seems SO bizarre, that I wonder if this should be brought to the attention of the 'main' boards of FR? With all our FReepers who do investigating, maybe THEY can come up with a clue on what this could be.
I just sent all of this information to my vet.
His long ongoing process and long years living with it actually gives me some hope for horses who get Cushings. The other experience with my friend's horse, where it happened so fast, made me really fear it.
Sure wouldn't hurt to make a "heads-up" Someone might know something, and don't necessarily frequent this thread.
Do either of you who have this source want to post this in a new thread? I'd ping these reports, but there are lots of horsepeople who would miss it if it's just here on the thread.
I think some of the rancher types and FReeper detective types would find it interesting.
