*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Maybe... Who knows. I don't know what she is for a rider. I'd have to see him for myself.
I think he "could" be worth that much, just not now, JMO:)
Becky
1. Just rears a little.
2. crow hops just a little.
3. throws his head and dances around just a little.
4. spoiled and stubborn.
5. trainer doesn't want him
sounds like the killer price to me.
But he's "sweeeet" tuffy:). That's worth a grand:)
Becky
Okay. You got me. And just hold on to your money. I'd feel bad about taking it. As a matter of fact, let me give you some gas money for hauling that old nag off.
The sad thing is this horse might have been fine when she bought him. But being a beginner she's probably let him get by with stuff and now he's developed bad habits.
I'm speculating, of course, don't mean to bash the poor lady, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's not the problem. With a very firm hand right from the start he could come around fast, but it's a gamble, and I wouldn't gamble $3000 on it.
Becky
And he's "stunning looking". She's tacking on another 2 thousand for his looks.
Buying horses on the basis of how pretty they are can get you killed.
That's what I was thinking. $800-I'll take the gamble, but no more.
Thanks buddy. :)
BigMack
Well, not being a TB lover, I wouldn't say he was stunning:), but he's OK.
Was the 4 month training the training he got for the track or after the track.
Becky
Good question, I never thought of that.
I disagree Mack. Ten is not old for a horse, and lots of great hunter jumpers came from the track. They don't probably fit your temperament, or what you want to do with them, but they're worth money to someone else. I'll say it again... horse pricing is arbitrary.
This is probably a meek beginner rider who has got too much horse. Happens all the time.
Did you happen to notice in her ad that she has "make me an offer" in caps? I guess you have to ask first what offers she'll be insulted by before you do it.
This woman is desperate to get rid of this albatross but she's wanting HER price. Maybe she doesn't want to admit to dad/boyfriend/husband that she talked into forking over the money to be mad at her.
Well, I've got no need for an event horse, nor for a thoroughbred. I looked at the ad though and the picture. He's a calm enough horse looks like, looks nice. I imagine stubborn translates to he doesn't understand what she wants. I'd offer $2500 if I were looking for that kind of horse, and then give more if in person he is what he looks like in the picture. JMHO here though.
What red flags that are most concerning to me would be the head tossing, crow hopping and rearing. I've been reared up and fallen over backwards on and that's how it started.
My plan had she taken my offer would have been to start him lunging and get him to respect me and my signals then probably send him to a professional for the first few rides.
I'm gonna have to agree with Mack, it's a $500 horse.
No its not, but to have only started trainging at 10 is a big deal, he was probably on the track untill he was 2 or three, that leaves 7 years that he has been wondering around untrained, it don't pass the smell test, what shes got is a green 10 year old that may or may not turn into a good solid horse of any kind, I bet she won't find any exprienced horse people that will give her 3 grand for an unproven 10 year old, it just don't happen, for 3 grand you can find some GREAT finished horses.
BigMack
Well, the value is always in the eyes of the buyer I guess. A friend offered $50 for a sick foal with no papers at an auction for horses that had been confiscated. The owner was insulted, said no way. She later sold that foal and a mare for $500 for the two to someone else I know. That person just sold that foal to someone else I know for $1000. I figured that the $50 price was right at the time, don't know how the foal turned out because I haven't seen it, it would be a coming yearling now. But, someone thinks it's worth $1000. I wouldn't have paid that, I wouldn't have paid the $50 either though :)
"I really don't want anyone to think I'm cheap or rude, though"
We think you are a lot of things but cheap and rude aren't on the list. Becky was telling me that her list of you broke new grounds for four-letter words.
I'm not going to dig in and fight one way or the other on this horse or any horse I hadn't seen for myself. As a novice, her words about how big or small his problems or potential are don't mean a lot to me. If I were looking for a TB, I'd go look at him.
