*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
I also have the Sackett's and Shadow Riders.
Another one I really like is Open Range with Kevin Costner and Robert Duval. Robert Duval plays a helluva cowboy.
Cool! So where were they from before that?
Yeah! That's it! Good one too.
Robert Duval plays a helluva cowboy...
You got that right, Sam Elliot too.
Open Range was similar to Monty Walsh in that they were kind of out of step with the changing times in the west.
I saw it summer-before-last in one of the few remaining Drive-In movies left around. It was a pretty cool way to see it. I haven't been back, but I've wanted to. They're only open on Friday and Saturday nights from May thru October and show double features of current movies for $5.50 a head. You can't beat the price and you can bring your own eats if you want to or get something at the snack bar. We always pop a bag or two of microwave popcorn and bring some candy bars and a cooler of cokes (substitute your favorite beverage). They have playground equipment up front under the screen for the kids so you can see 'em (we don't have any). People who have pick-up trucks usually park backwards with their lounge chairs in the back for a more comfortable viewing experience. The sound comes in over your car radio when you tune it to a special station, but they also have the old timey speakers that you hang on the window, plus there's big speakers outside for the people who want to sit out in a lawn chair on on a blanket. It's pretty cool, can you tell I like it?! ;o)
The family on my mother's side all hails from Iowa. My great grandmother came over from Portugal before my grandmother was born. Not sure how far my father's side goes back.
I went to a drive in movie theater up in New Hampshire once. It was really cool. There's a closed down one around here somewhere, I think. Wish they had more where I am.
I've read all those too. Beulah Land is the one that, IMO, probably shows a bit more balanced view. I was a bit shocked at some of the stuff in it, only having read GWTW before that. I thought the times as portrayed in GWTW made the south sound like heaven:). Very naieve kid:) I especially loved all the description of the clothes, and wished we still dressed like that, funny comeing from me who would almost rather die now then put on a dress. My idea of dressing up now, is jeans with a nice crease and a button shirt instead of a Tee:)
Becky
LOL...I knew there were still some pretty deep feelings about all that around. Don't feel bad...I don't get it either really. I find it hard to understand blaming one eras sins on the next.
Becky
:) Grandmother and grandfather came over from Portugal, grandmother from Lisbon, grandfather from the Azores.
Ironically my Grandfather, on my Dad's side, died of a hernia because of a horse.
The horse went though a floor board in the barn. He was trying to get the hoof out of the board. Not an easy task on a big work horse.
My grandmother on my mother's side came over from Italy. I've seen pictures of them at Ellis Island. My great grandfather on my dad's side came from Belgium.

STupid weather men. The sun is shining nice and it's pretty warm, so I'm headed out to saddle a horse.
Becky
Good for you.... take some horse pictures!

Eric is sending me a program to download tonight when I get home to increase the size of the picture. Hopefully with complete instructions since I don't get home until after he leaves work.

sorry forgot to change user.
Died of a hernia!? I didn't know you could DIE of a hernia.! What happened?
Mare is doing fine, fat and miserable.
I think the issue is when she's standing, there is a lot of glare on her from the overhead light in her stall. There would probably be less glare when she lays down (which will be the time that really matters) as she'd be further from the light. Is that true? Otherwise, one remedy to make it clearer might be to do something that would diffuse the light a little, if possible. Is that just a bare bulb or is it fluorescent?
