Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I've been in big boarding barns where other horses didn't pitch the kind of fit Bay pitched. He's the exception, I guess.
Sorry, I didn't take any pictures this time. Not much to look at where we went but trees. If I'd thought about it, I could've taken some pictures of the horse having a fit about crossing the bridge, but her rider might not have appreciated it. I'd never met them before.
The bridges I hate the most are the old ones with a wooden bed that have boards running width-wise, then another set of boards on top of that about a foot or 18 inches wide that are set a car-width apart that the tires are supposed to stay on. There's quite a few of those left around here in rural areas and they scare me to death. I'm always afraid that if the horse steps off the double part their foot will go through, but I'm sure they're stronger than they look. (hopefully)
I don't think I'd have the geldings on either side. And I'd be scared to let her have it in an area with the pipe panels. She could have it up close to the panel and they baby could accidentally roll over and get up on the opposite side of the panel from mama and then you'd have a train wreck on your hands. I'm a Nervous Nellie, but I'd want to have something around the bottom to keep that from happening.
We use to have an old suspension bridge that we had to cross going to town. That thing was awful, creaked and groaned bad when you drove over it. Years before we came here they had laid cement slabs across the boards you are talking about. They would rock when stepped on. I rode horses across it a handful of times. That was a trip:) About 3-4 years ago they finally took it down and rebuilt. I had meant to get pictures of it before they took it down, but they had it down in one day after posting that the road was closed. It was a big part of my kids growing up.
There are two ways to get to our neighbor hood. Both ways had old bridges to cross, the suspension bridge and then a smaller old metal one. The suspension bridge was actually condemed for school buses or anything bigger then 3 tons. So school buses had use the smaller one. One summer the old small one caved in after a bigger truck went over it.
The suspension bridge then was it and it took a year to get the caved in one rebuilt. When the bus brought kids home out here, since it was condemend, the bus had to unload, the kids walked across, the bus drove over, then reloaded. Of course that was as dangerous as just driving across, because of course the kids thought it great fun to push and shove walking over it. I imagine the school lost alot of books too over that bridge. It finally took the parents really nagging to get them to hurry up and get the other bridge fixed. I think the story made it to local news several times. Showing the poor kids walking over the bridge in rain and snow. They thought it was fun tho:)
The creek under it was pretty deep. A few of the really brave or nutty kids in the neighbor hood depending on your point of view actually bungy jumped off it. My kids didn't, that I know of at least. It was a neat bridge that you don't see alot now a days, but I'm glad it's gone. I held my breath everytime I had to cross it.

Dot was born in the panels. I don't think the foal could get under them...(knock on wood).
But the more I think about it, I don't think I want the geldings on either side of her either. They'll either have to go in together, or she'll have to stay in the arena.

No obvious reason for losing them either so far.
When Bob(TheBiter)was born, I had Bluebell up in a stall with a wooden gate for a door. The lower boards of that gate were not even a foot apart, but somehow he managed to get on the wrong side of it. I have no idea how to this day. I was at work and my neighbor heard a big commotion and went down to the barn to find an hour-old Bob out in the pasture with the other mare, and Bluebell running around out in the yard trying to get back in, screaming and hollering. It was an old tin barn and the only thing I can figure is she found a hole or weak spot in the outside wall and kicked her way out. The stall gate was still latched from the inside when I got home from work. It scared the $hit out of me thinking what could've happened. He's lucky to be alive. I've let my mares have their foals out in the pasture with no problem ever since and that's what I plan to do this time.
I like your idea of letting her have it in the arena better too. More room, but she can still see the others for company.
I like the arena best too, other then it will make it harder for me to keep track of her at night, and if it's raining I won't be able to sleep out there. No shelter.
When she had Dot I slept out there:). If it was raining I just put my cot in the stall. But the run is small enough that I can see/hear her easily. In the arena she could get pretty far away, and I might not hear things happening:) I guess I could leave the arena lights on all night...

Well it warmed up nice, and I got the closet finished:), so I think I'm going to feed a little early this afternoon, and then ride Rusty in the arena. He needs it.

Our bridges on the state forest trails have all been replaced in the last 10 years. All are metal bridges with a wood plank deck. They are good and safe, if a bit noisy, the horses really make a lot of noise going across, and they do move and flex a little when a horse is on them, so it can be un-nerving. They are only about 4-feet wide with a high 4-foot steel guard rail on each side that looks like it would take your leg right off at the knee, but does contain the horse ;~D I can't believe I've never taken a picture of one of us crossing one!
Board that I participate in, filly born last night, died this morning, no reason known yet.
Well, what kind of precautions can you take to avoid this sort of thing?

I can't either! I guess when the pucker factor is that high, you ain't thinking about no stinking camera. ;o)
How does something like that effect the mare?

I've heard that twins almost always die. I don't know why though.

I take it you've had a high pucker coefficient youself at some point. Lord knows I have. Sometimes I wonder how I ever kept my butt from just eating that saddle right up. ;o)
