*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*
Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
Great pictures, thanks for posting them. You cut your hair. I like it :)
What kind of bit did you order? I just love getting new horse stuff.
I don't know. I've heard it both ways about whether the sire or the dam is responsible for color. I think you just have to go by past breeding history and even then, it's a crap shoot.
Thanks! I didnt have any time to do anything with it long, so i had it cut short.
Misty seemed put out that we didnt saddle her up, but maybe we'll get a chance tommorow.
I was a little nervous, as its been a while, but after we both got settled, we did fine. Sugar is my favourite!
Thunder didnt seem bothered one bit by all that went on which was great. Hasn't he grown! : D
Jointed Kimberwicks are the best! Good choice!
Aw, Thunder is such a perfect looking little guy! Really cute. And he's filled out so MUCH!
I'm fortunate that my tack shop does allow you to do trial runs on saddles. A week I think, but you can bet as soon as that week is up, he's on the phone asking you whether you're going to buy it or return it.
Black points are always dominant, no matter what, so if you breed to a bay, mom or dad, you'll always get a bay. The buckskin end of the color spectrum must be fairly recessive because it's not commonly seen. Does he pass on any of the other buckskin traits like the dun strip down the back or any tiger striping in the leg? Does Belle have a dun stripe, and does Dot?
well hes two and a half weeks old and growing so fast, but if you think hes big and filled out, you should see Adge at two months! Guess I need to take some more pics : D
Glad you had a good time riding, and even more glad you remembered to bring the camera when you did! ~much applause~ :~D
Did she have good manners after all this time or did she protest work at all? It's a great horse and a prize that can go long periods and get right back into work without any power struggles.
Just by way of critique, which really isn't fair to do about a casual paddock ride... but you'd be a lot more stable in the saddle, and probably have happier knees when you were done, if your stirrups were longer.
You got your pictures!
We didnt have any problems at all, in fact she looked positively unhappy when I took the saddle off!
As for the stirrups, I said the same to James when I was on her, told him he must have used them before me! We didnt want to mess with her too much though because of Thunder and also I was hoping the children would get a chance to ride, but we didnt have time.
It was fun though and I was very thankfull that she was kind to me! I gave her a big hug and kiss at the end and james just shook his head at us! : D
Was just a minor point, and I know it's a pain to move Western stirrups around if you are not going to be on long... [insert English snootiness] :~D
Was just suggesting that IF you get knee fatigue (my knees are the first thing to tire) too-short stirrups are the problem.
That is one heck of a cute colt there! :~D
Um.......James has just told me that the saddle I got out was a "kids saddle" and that is as long as those stirrups go........so I guess I need to get my saddle out next time! LOL. I was just excited that I had a little bit of free time to ride!
James is killing himself laughing here.........: D
And Sugar's tire is 'gone' isn't it? I can't see that any of it remains. Her weight is good... You're feeding her well!
It's good to ride and let baby follow along... Have you done halter with him yet? He's getting big! About this age they can rear up, and for a while they think it's the neatest trick in the world. he may rear up and paw at you when riding during that time... keep your eye out!
James shouldn't laugh at Sharn! Bad James! ;~D
Short hair is soooo much easier, at least for me. Frees up all that time that I used to have to spend on it to do something else, and I'm never short of things to do. :)
I want to put the new bridle together but I have to get caught up here... eat some lunch, get caught up on a couple other threads, punch some holes in the bridle, and clip Bay's face and bridle path so he looks good when he models it I think!
Well, the black points are dominate. Red is dominate too so that's why you see so many bays. Belle may not have the dominate red though, I think it's E. She may be Ee or ee. The black points are A or a.
Thunder just ran alongside and enjoyed himself, he didnt rear or get close enough to be a problem at all. He seems quite happy to be around us and seems totally unconcerned when we are with him. I have a really good feeling about him, Adge is the same. I'm hoping its because I managed to imprint them both all over and then give them attention after they were born. Their Moms are good horses too and happy to be near us which the foals see.
Her "tire" has all gone and she is doing good with her weight, Misty dropped a little after she started feeding but she is remaining steady. I think any change shows more on her anyway.
We feed them mare and foal feed with extra oil and they have plenty of hay too. I noticed that Sugar is shedding like mad whereas Misty hasnt started yet. I brushed her and could have stuffed a pillow with what fell! LOL Her mane is all braided, all done by herself, so i need to work on that whn I get time.
It is so nice to have some time again.
Mama comes out of the hospital in a few hours, she will be back with us a week and then her and daddy are going to stay with James brother and wife (no children and he doesnt work). I love them to bits, but cant deal with them and the family anymore and look after our children too. Mama is a 24 hour need and im exhausted. Her doctor doesnt know how i have coped alone and believes she is a candidate for a nursing home, but as the family deny her needs which are extensive, they are taking her on now. I am going to miss her, but I need to think about the children too, Emma watched Dave (her dad) die and she doesnt need to see her grandma close up in the late stages.
It does mean that for the first time in nearly 4 years, james me and the kids will be able to do some things as a family. I am excited!
