*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You mean one of the black horses in the background or the pony getting washed?

I'm curious about something, and wondered if you guys who have been around horses alot have run into much of this.

I have now heard of 3 cases of people dealing with broken jaws in horses. One was a horse of my own. At the time I was dealing with it, I figured that it was probably a rare rare thing to happen to a horse.

Last night at bunko, a friend of my DIL's mentioned that their stud was recovering from one. And the third incident of my hearing about one was that "might" have been what was wrong with that paint horse I had that twitched so bad when riding him.

3 cases in the years I've been dealing with horses is starting to sound to me like it might not be such a rare injury. Any of you ever have a problem with it, or heard about it?

Becky

Actually, I did once see a horse with an old (recovered) broken jaw... it healed crooked, he was no show horse to look at, but he was fine.

Yes I have. I don't remember the whole plot, but it was pretty good.

HHHMMMMMM. The horse I had, we never even knew his jaw was broke, and it healed crooked, but not to the degree that it was noticable.

How we found out was after it healed he started having white foam drip from his mouth all the time. I took him to the vet. When the vet reached in his mouth he gasped and said, I think he has something like PVC pipe stuck over his back teeth. He put one of those things in to hold the horses mouth open and flashed a light in and it wasn't PVC, but his bottom teeth were totally encrusted with thick tarter, because his jaws didn't match up and keep it ground off.

He filed all of it off, but the teeth underneath were damaged, had turned soft.

I kept him for several years but had to keep having his teeth floated every couple of months and it was very expensive, because the teeth grew so much that it took alot to keep them filed.

I finally took him to OSU vet college, hoping they might be able to rebreak it and let it heal straight, or pull the teeth. They said it could be done, but the expense was prohibitive. The vet there said it wasn't something that the students would have to deal often enough with that would benefit them to having to do it. If it had been something they would benefit from they would have done it alot cheaper.

The vet said the horse was in good shape then, but was going to start to deteriorate soon, and it would be a slow death, plus the expense of having to keep floating his teeth.

Usually when the horses fidgeting when I'm grooming and want them to be still I tap them on their bellies if "stand " doesn't work. I found with Sarah Lee the other day that if I put my hand on her withers she immediately stops or doesn't move. I tried it with the other one and it worked with him too. I'm talking about just a light pressure/squeeze. This shouldn't bother them should it. I know you keep the blanket up to keep the saddle off but it's nothing like that.

When I get home tonight, I will post a picture of a horse, I had a number of years back. I was going to post it the other day, when you mentioned the broken jaw. The theme changed, so I didn't. This horse might or might not have had a broken jaw. You will see, and let me know your opinion.

Good morning. I've never heard of any horses with broken jaws so I don't believe it's a common thing.

The withers area is one of their favorite places to be scratched - they will scratch and groom each other in that area. When ever we are doing something with one of the horses that they are afraid of or don't like, I always put my hand in that area, rubbing and scratching. Seems to help them relax.

OK.

This is beginning more and more not to look like such a rare problem. And thinking about it, I can see how it could happen, watching the horses play, kicking at each other.

Geezz, another thing to worry about:)

I've never seen one that was noticable tho.

Ok, good. I just didn't want to be messing with something on their back that I shouldn't.

One more question if you don't mind. When you are working with things that spook should you introduce it slowly or just do it. Like the cup I kicked. Should I have showed it to her first and kicked it further away from her. I had no idea myself it was going to be so loud .
