*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes I read that and it made me want to take a swipe at him!

Pedophiles love children, they don't mean to hurt them either.

You'd think 10 grand per kid was enough but they are always pushing for more. They want you to keep your mouth shut and your wallet open.

More than likely we'll finish out this year and go elsewhere next year. Shame because the lower school is really good, it's just the upper school that sucks. I'm really leaning towards homeschooling, it's the only way to be sure that your kids aren't being fed smut in the name of Christian education.

We have droughts! My pasture turned to brown dust last summer, it didn't rain from July 4 into September.

It hasn't rained a lot this winter... I wouldn't be surprised that we're behind. We tend to get so much rain in winter that we couldn't use it all... in summer we still dry out.

I'm also asking http://www.abeka.com/
I think we are much alike, I'd do anything for my kids. Yes I am protective, you need to be in this sad world.
My kids schools are great at the moment, but my 10 year old (Emma) is already ahead a year in grades and getting straight "A" s and getting bored.
At some point we want to get a lot more acerage in the mountains and if i homeschool i dont have to worry about local schools.
Its just an idea for me right now, I dont have your problems, and I wish i could be more help to you.

I remember you saying that it was dryer over in Eastern Washington. But did not know that you had lack of water problems there too.

A few years ago it quit raining here in July. By late August we were feeding hay and continued to do so until the next April. Many trees died that year and some are still standing. They are usually in a fence row and when they fall, the fence goes with them.

This is my pasture last August. I never had grass last summer, and fed almost all year. We never got enough rain even in spring.

Just being supportive is more help than anyone realizes. Being on "my side" and listening to me kvetch is incredibly helpful.

This school does use abeka curriculum but I'm betting this particular book isn't on the abeka list.

I'm terribly over protective and I'm not going to apologize for it. If the parents don't protect their children, who will? I want my innocent kids to stay innocent kids for as long as possible. I could strangle than teacher for putting smut in my daughter's head that never would have been there otherwise.

No wonder you were wanting more land cleared for grazing. I hope that you get more rain this year. It gets expensive feeding hay all year round.

Yeah - it does... I pretty much plan on feeding a lot of the year, but in prior years they could go without hay from April though July, with it usually being too dry in August but improving again in Sept through October. We now have the second area to rotate too, but now the pasture will be even more strained with three on it.

I just hate looking out there at that brown. I wish I could water it.

If you have a stream nearby you could water it yourself. Small gasoline powered water pumps are not that expensive. Rotational grazing is a must though and that is when electric fences are really handy.

Nope - no stream... I'm on a well and don't pay for water... I just don't have the water pressure to power a sprinkler on a hose out that far. It needs it's own well out there.

Well it's a decision only you and your husband can make. Praying for you. I'm afraid if it was me I would homeschool those kids and take that money and build me an indoor arena though:')

When you buy your own land you need Frog's help to pick it out. She seems to have a knack for finding land that has plenty of water....... : )

Great, I'll have her come up!

Many areas around here have plenty... too much... water... lots of seasonally flooded bottomland that is under water now and stays green the longest in summer. I'd like to have about half the property in that, and half up on high ground.

I've been thinking about your trailor situation and was just thing that since you don't use it every day maybe you could go in with 2 or 3 friends and share it. That way you could get the one you wanted for less expense,

Heh... I've really thought of that too... that there's a lot of people who store trailers most of the time or have no where to park it... Thing is... if I had a trailer, we'd use it all the time... I hope. We might need it on all the same weekends regardless.

Well it would have to be like car sharing and rules and schedules set. I don't mind loaning but I don't like sharing but it might be a temporary fix.

If she does come up, be prepared to go on a few trail rides......

That is the way my land lies. Part in bottomland with two streams and the rest on higher ground. Not much grazing on the bottomland during wet winters but great for hay during the summer.
