The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 01/27/2005 9:59:05 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Gilbert and Sullivan goes, mine's downright non-existent

Who is this "Gilbert and Sullivan" of which you speak?...

I'll ask the Homely, gay dwarf... he'll know... oh Corin...

Oh, you'd like them, I'm sure! They're wonderfully fun. Very catchy songs, though. Almost too catchy.

Netflix would likely at least have the Pirates of Penzance that was made a few years ago with Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury, Linda Ronstadt and a couple of other big names. It's surprisingly well done, considering.

Humorous operettas from awhile back. Great lyrics that move really fast.

This is the one Jen mentioned:

Everything's complicated by the fact that I'm working with engineers. I asked for a simple analysis (call it "project A"). But their complex brains can not grasp "simple". They're accustomed to doing a complex analysis that requires all sorts of input parameters and raw data (call it "project B").

"Ah," they say when I try to explain that I want project A. "So you want to do something different. Ok, we'll need X,Y,Z data sets to do project B."

"No, I want A!!"

"Ok, we haven't done that before, though, so it'll take more time."

"But it's SIMPLER!! It should take less time."

"Well, given that we're doing projects A and B and we don't have the data we need for B, it might not get done in time."

"But you're not doing B. I don't want B. Just do A!"

"Can you explain A again?"

So I draw a sketch and explain the different ways I want to use the results from A.

"Oh, that's a different case entirely!" Introduce mythical project C. "Doing *three* projects will take even longer... and we still don't have the data for B!"

ARGH! I kid you not, I had this conversation yesterday.

There's nothing wrong with music.

It boggles my mind that we have come to an age where ANY kind of singing with a story or as part of a plot is seen as either immature or gay. I think that's pretty sad. It's ALWAYS been part of entertainment, until very recently.

Personally, I was raised even watching/listening to *gasp* opera, and I think that's a good thing. There are sooo many cultural references, particularly in literature, that I wouldn't grasp otherwise.

hey darlin' I wuz jokin'...

but to be honest, I ain't never seen G&S's werk...

warriors have sung throughout the ages, marching into battle... Spartans sang hymns to keep they're phalanx in step, and to time their spear thrusts... I carried a walkman into Kuwait... and sang to myself constantly...

a real man ain't afraid of music, or to sing...

It's not. g'nad's just trying to keep his sensitive side in the closet.

Yeah...bagpipes...mmmm...

I know you're pretty much jokin'. But it irks me sometimes that if I, say, rent any kinda musical or opera, I feel like I hafta do it furtively.

There are definitely some really lousy, immature, or gay musicals, though. I'll admit that.

As fer bein' series about "Gilbert and Sullivan" I pretty much only know the movie version Rosie mentioned, and the small part used in "Chariots of Fire."

The song in "Chariots of Fire" is from HMS Pinafore.

You shouldn't feel that way Rosie. God gave us the arts to enjoy.

Right, I knew it wasn't from "Pirates."

Did I ever tell you guys that we had missionary friends who were in prison with Eric Liddle in China? After they were released, they spent most of the rest of their missionary career in Taiwan.

It's partly just 'cause the main rental places are run by punks, though. ;-) Remember that time I came in and posted all het up because I'd gone out to rent a movie to watch with my little sister, and they were playing some movie that was DEFINITELY not for general audience viewing. And this was at four or so in the afternoon!

So they probably give ALL adults that look, regardless of what they're renting. We're the enemy, doncha know.

Heh...

I've never gotten Netflix before because I just don't watch movies often enough to make it worth it. I've seen maybe two or three this month, tops.

I dunno...maybe splitting it could make it worth it. Might be somethin' to think about.

There are less expensive options with Netflix and with the Walmart program. You can spend less and get two a month (I think).

I'm enjoying it because I'm catching up on "old" TV shows. Last night I watched the first three (or four, one was a double) episodes of Star Trek: TNG. Two of them I didn't remember.

But it's the only way I can catch all of "24." Granted, I don't like waiting for season 4, but I can.

I watched the first few episodes of "Red Dwarf" the other night. I was not amused.
