Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Tomorrow we may come this way...
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

heh...
I made a killer hamburger helper this evening. Except it wasn't actually hamburger helper, it was the Aldis equivalent (which actually makes more) and it wasn't made with hamburger, it was made with ground turkey.
The jedis loved it.
Steve told me the other day that he used to buy ground turkey all the time years ago, before we got married. Said it was cheaper and he could afford to buy more beer.

Yes... powerpoint is evil. I detest it.
Most people misuse it badly. Note: Just because there is a way to slide/fade/bounce/swipe everything doesn't mean that everything *should* behave in some amusing way. Dancing baloney does in fact distract people from the message.
Or then there's the other: "I'm trying to email this presentation to a client, and it keeps bouncing back. What's wrong with our server? Please fix it ASAP or I will lose this client!!"
ME: "Send me the bounce notice. What is in the presentation?"
HIM: "Some pictures and a little video, and only a hundred or so slides. Please fix our server NOW."
ME: "How many pictures and how much video?"
HIM: "Only fifty or so, and only about twenty minutes of video."
ME: "...and this file is... how big?"
HIM: "Only 105 Megs. That's not the problem. I can copy it to the server and back just fine. Have you fixed our mail server yet?"
ME: "The bounce message is from AOL. Did you know that AOL has a 3Mb limit on message size?"
HIM: "Well... I can't work with that. When will you be able to get them to change it to accept my file?"
[sound of pump action on Remington 870]
ME: "Any second now..."

Ha! That's what is so funny about the stuff my mom sends. It's hugh stuff and goes off her box just fine, she's got cable.
Shuts down my dial-up email for hours, though...

In my field they dump pages of text on a slide. 12 point font. Couldn't read it if you tried. But no worries. They read it to you. Word by word. With their back to you. Droning on in their nervous little voices.
Powerpoint is a crutch. It interferes with good communication.

Said it was cheaper and he could afford to buy more beer. I can relate. Turkey burger makes a great Ramen ingredient. :-) Along with hot dogs... tuna...

Powerpoint is a crutch. It interferes with good communication. Exactly. And it's the perfect venue for people with no graphic talent...
...to prove they have no graphic talent.

They like to do that with the financial info for the "state of the college" presentations. Teeeeeny tiny print. And then they read off the numbers while the rest of us sit squinting and shifting from side to side trying to figure out which column they're actually referring to.
Just one of many reasons those meetings give me headaches...

Concur.
It *can* be used effectively, but only when done with a minimalist attitude. Very rarely done in practice.

If it's used to highlight the main points, it can be good.
When the presenter uses every swishy effect possible, puts the ENTIRE TEXT of his speech on the slides, and reads directly off of 'em...it's bad. Very bad.

That's one of the biggest no-no's of presentations, and maybe the most often ignored.
*Never* read the slide. Put up the slide and talk *about* the bullet point, but don't ever use the same words. The difference may seem subtle but it really isn't.
That and the rule of *one* and only *one* point per slide. In fact... only really one point per presentation. If you can't boil the whole presentation down to one brief sentence, then it doesn't matter what you say because it won't be remembered.

See there? I was only *talking* about powerpoint and I've bored the thread to death. Kilted it I did. :-)
