The Hobbit Hole XIX - Tomorrow we may come this way...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Tomorrow we may come this way...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

At least now that it's been there a year or so, he's not constantly scolding people about it! But my gosh...people have used the things for centuries, right? I imagine it'd take a pretty good blow with the edge of something to crack it. Not that I'm going to experiment, but...

My house has had nothing but ceramic tile in it for years and many things have been dropped on it without a chip or crack. I'm talking heavy pots and pans, boxes of books, tools, etc.

I think there are maybe 2 tiles in the house that have a hairline crack in them, but those happened because they weren't laid right and once too much weight was applied to them, they cracked.

They haven't lifted or split completely through yet, but we have a few extra tiles in the garage in the event they do.

The ceramic tile that's made these days is a lot tougher than the ones made back in the day. It takes quite a bit of force to break it. We've had to use a hammer to break old tiles and it's taken more than one blow.

My only concern would be the drastic changes in temperature that you all up north deal with. That may weaken the grout and lift the tiles, which would loosen the tiles and make them more breakable.

Now THAT is true. Nothing really can survive dropping on tile. Glass, hard plastic, clay...it all shatters on impact.

But clean up is easy on tile, even if there is more to clean up.

Considering what it was Corin was worried about breaking...this is very interesting, Ruthy!

But clean up is easy on tile, even if there is more to clean up.

'cept in our house, it's likely to be a hip.

I've already promised myself that when I have my own place I will definitely have either carpet or wood in my bedroom.

Frozen feet are not fun!

I have to wear my chancletas around the house on cold days to avoid foot cramps!

I think they're really strong floors, even up here... It's just neurotic dads we are smilin' at! My dad was nutty about our carpet too, Buying special little plates to prevent carpet dents where the furntiure sat... even when we showed him that the dents didn't stay. ...and even the linoleum, afraid that the dogs toenails would scratch it. He actually wanted to set the refrigerator on a board on the linoleum so the weight of the refrigerator wouldn't dent the new flooring. Not while we moved it... I mean where it was going to sit permanently. ;~D

*grin*

That's my grandfather (mom's dad) too. He would go out and squeegee his car in the morning because he had heard the dew ruins the paint. *shakes head*

Doing good! Still having those spells...but I just live with 'em! They'll go away eventually.

I'm supposed to donate blood, but I think I'm gonna hold off till these go away...it makes me light-headed...no sense adding insult to injury so to speak!

You would find it all the funnier if you could see the condition of the rest of the house...it's not like everything else is perfect!

I guess he's getting finicky in his old age. ;-)

And these people walk among us... You'd never know that just under the surface lies a completely irrational neurosis. ;~D

I think that's a good idea, sis. No reason to spur on the dizziness.

The Bloodmobile can wait. :-D

You'd never know that just under the surface lies a completely irrational neurosis.

My grandfather (to get a time reference, he died in 1968 at age 81), did not trust "paper money" and thought going to the bathroom inside was unsanitary...

Yup.

Like my irrational discomfort around latex balloons. The folks here at work delight in throwing overinflated balloons into my cubicle and watching the show.

Not as good a show as if I spot a cockroach, but good entertainment nevertheless.

Mylar balloons don't bother me a bit, but the latex ones unnerve me!

That was Mom, too. It was painful watching her blow up balloons for birthdays...she would be cringing the whole time, and never blow them up to full size.

As soon as a few of us were old enough to take care of it, she'd send us farrrr away to blow 'em up, and still sit wincing with her fingers in her ears. Or better yet, leave the house altogether.
