Astronomers have discovered evidence for physics beyond Einstein's general relativity. This artist's conception shows a galactic black hole being orbited by a ripple in spacetime--a distortion in the fabric of space itself. Credit: Dana Berry (CfA/NASA).

This artist's conception shows the binary system GRS1915+105, which shows evidence for a wave of spacetime in its accretion disk. A 10 solar mass black hole at the center of the disk pulls gas from a nearby companion star. The gas spiraling into the black hole heats so much that it emits X-ray radiation. These observations confirm one important theory about how a black hole's extreme gravity can stretch light.

Like, EXTREME gravity, dude! COWABUNGA!

Science Ping! An elite subset of the Evolution list.
See list's description in my freeper homepage. Then FReepmail to be added/dropped.

Here is what happens...

Big Bang, followed by expansion...

formation of stars, planets, moons and Black Holes...

one Black Hole finally sucks in every other one and...

Big Bang again.

Einstein is very overrated.

We should all be so over-rated.

BTW, I especially enjoyed this part:

"High-frequency QPOs are likely from matter racing around the black hole, glowing like lightbulbs on a merry-go-round," said Homan. "Of course, matter is moving much faster around a black hole than on any amusement park attraction. We see frequencies of hundreds of hertz, or hundreds of revolutions of the disk per second. That's quite a ride."

Hundreds of revolutions of the disk per second. When you figure that the disk probably has a diameter of several tens (or perhaps even hundreds) of miles, the imagination starts to struggle.

Einstein is very overrated. Perhaps, just how many new physics theorems have you submitted for worldwide scrutiny by the finest minds? I am sure your legacy will far surpass Alberts, inspiring many for centuries to come.

A couple thousand years from now only two legendary American names of our era will be common knowledge: the first will be George Washington, and the other will be Albert Einstein.*

Just wait and see!!

* Einstein became a U.S. citizen in 1940.
